  • What numbers did you get for first cousins?

I need to resolve a family rumor that my grandmother was not daughter of her father. I matched against my grandmother's niece (brother's daughter). We are wondering if the results confirm we are both related through both of my grandmother's parents. The results were 599.01 for shared CM and 58.14 longest block. Family Tree Maker says that we are first cousins once removed. I would love to hear the results of other people who tested against first cousins, especially first cousins once removed. Thanks a lot!

There could be a wide range of DNA shared between first cousins once removed but that would certainly be in the range of what would be expected, would actually be towards the higher side. Both my mom and grandmother have first cousins 1x removed that were tested. Now these were with 23andme so the numbers might differ slightly if tested here but here was the data.

Mom to her 1c1r 397.5 shared cM 70 cM longest block
Grandma to her 1c1r 346 shared 32 cM longest block

I have one example of full first cousins:

743 cM, longest block 103 cM

I also have three examples of first cousins once removed:

      584 cM, longest 81 cM
      570 cM, longest 44 cM
      350 cM, longest 43 cM

The first of these is in line with the total cM in your example, but with a larger longest block. So these do seem likely full first cousins once removed.

This match only shows your grandmother and her brother were related, so then their children and grandchildren are too. It doesn't say whether your grandmother and her brother are full or half siblings. Just want to be clear before I tell you that in my own opinion I think your grandmother and her brother were full siblings based on the number and the fact you and this other person are supposed to be once removed cousins.

That is a reading you could see for either first cousins or first cousins once removed.

I have seen full first cousin readings range from 530.6cm to 1128.1cm

I have seen first cousin once removed readings range from 218.4cm to 555.3cm

I think that number is too high for you two being half cousins once removed. A 200cM number would be more in line with half cousins once removed. That's just my own thought.

          Matt.

Thanks, everyone. Your input has put a rumor in its grave. Now that I know the numbers needed to prove a first cousin once removed, I am wondering if I will ever find a good match on FTDNA because the numbers for my other matches are tiny compared to my cousin.
