I too tend to focus on blocks of DNA. However, I do not ignore smaller segments, especially if they continually show up on the same chromosome in the same general area as a block in other people.

Biologically, it is probably extremely important and advantageous to recombine DNA (in the nucleus but not the Y chromosomal DNA) as much as possible.

Having said all of that, I never take the word of one or a few geneticists. I have found them to be wonderful scientists but, quite frankly, at times, unbelievably poor historians. They have been trained to focus on quantitative research rather than qualitative research. They focus on a few immediate generations of people and don't focus on known ethnicity, family tradition or any of the paper trail that gives hints of who an individual actually is. Everything they say is to be questioned. They ignore information that is right in front of them, including any they would gain from reading these forums. I've lived too long and worked around too many "scientists" not to realize they have their own agenda and their own way of passing along information that could be blantantly false.

I agree with this. If you have a decent paper trail or family tree those sub 7cm matches do tend to pan out.

This is good news. I tested with 23andMe V3 and then with FTDNA while my Mum, Dad, maternal 1st cousin, brother-in-law and neice have just tested with 23andMe this year. It will be a great asset to add their data to FTDNA.
