Upgrading to Family Finder

I took a Y DNA test after purchasing the third party upgrade option. If I upgrade to family finder, do I have to take another swab sample? If not, are my family finder results instantaneous?

You shouldn't have to send anymore DNA since they already have a sample..But the results will take some time...as they will have to add them to a batch to be processed.

the number of people from either FamilyFinder or 23andMe who have uploaded their data at Gedmatch is pretty small. i have 127 matches here on FF and 1005+ on 23andMe; if i count only the Gedmatch matches that meet criteria levels similar to FF & 23andMe, there are precious few, really.

I just counted your GEDmatch results down to 7cM/700 SNPs and it was just over 100 matches. Admittedly, there's a few duplicates where people have tested with both companies. If you discount the 80+% at 23andMe that don't "do" genealogy, that likely puts you well below 200 usable matches there. Granted, GEDmatch hasn't caught up with the big boys (yet), but, "precious few"?

If I read these two posts correctly, you have only tested YDNA. If that is correct then the only matces that you currently have are males that closely match either your 12 or 37 marker results.

Family Finder tests autsomal (sp?) DNA which will give you matches with either sex and are not merely based on YDNA. Most of the matches that you get using Family Finder will be different than those using YDNA.

Then by entering your FTDNA Family Finder raw data into GEDMatch will give another totally different set of matches.

The Family Finder results will usually take 4 to 6 weeks to appear.

well, that'll teach me to assert something while remaining true to my lazy self and not logging in and running the numbers to actually check them. seriously, is it that many? i honestly had no idea it was that many! i will have to check out my list again! thanks.

I had 73 matches on Family Finder and when I transfered to Gedmatch it jumped up to a minimum of 270.

JohnO: I'm looking at this now. This is interesting: Running my 23andMe kit I have 102 matches > 7cM on the longest segment.

But running my FF Illumina kit I have *167* matches > 7 cm!

Some undetermined number of these are, of course, duplicates - people, like myself, who have multiple datasets uploaded.

Is the default for both runs 700 SNPs? So all of these meet the 7cM/700 SNP cut-off?

(The most intriguing one is - still - my match with F198306 with 54.9 total shared/19.5 longest shared that FF does not recognize, and about which IT has either gone silent and/or has been so majorly distracted by various other things that they've not taken a look at it.)

I suspect on Chrom 15 -- 19.5cm -- 2,244SNPs should also be a match with FF. If you are near the 7cm and 700NPs then I can see the matching not showing due to different error rates and segment matching lengths.

I would certainly send FTDNA a message concerning this.

I did write - after several communications with John Olson. Darrin from FTDNA was very responsive, and eventually asked me for screen captures of the Gedmatch autosomal comparison charts, which I sent them. That's when he turned it over to IT - it's been over two months now.....

I've just received my results from FGS mtDNA. The only upgrade that is possible in my case would be Family Finder Autosomal DNA test. I found it quite expensive. Isn't there any other test, or plans for a future test for those who already have FGS?

Family Finder is a completely different DNA test than MT-DNA. FGS is your direct mother line mitochondrial DNA and only goes to one line ancestor ( mother, Mother,Mother). Family Finder is autosomal and can go to any ancestor anywhere on your tree. It helps find cousin lines. The more people in your family you test for Family Finder the better it is at finding possible connections since each person in your family and each generation will inherit slightly different DNA from another from your ancestors.
