I recently received the results of my Y37 test and am waiting for FF. I am adopted and have no information at this point regarding my paternal line. I have 697 exact matches at 12 and 6 exact at 25. However, I have no exact matches at 37. Five of the six matches at 25 seem to share a common surname or variation of a surname. If I understand correctly, the matches at 25 mean we share a common ancestor between 200-700 years ago. Is my understanding correct? Would this result be enough to join the surname project? Or should I wait for the FF? Hopefully, my rambling makes sense.

You should definitely try joining the surname project. Membership in most projects isn't restricted. There could also be closer matches within the project, who aren't set to match against the entire database.

What is your GD with your 25-marker matches? I had one 25-marker match (GD=1) who was not deemed a match at 37 but showed up again at 67 markers.

The GD shows exact for 6 matches at 25, with 5 having a common variation of surname German. I have 36 with GD of 1 and 283 of with GD of 2 all at the 25 marker. At 37, I have 2 matches at a GD of 4. I'm new to this so I'm not quite sure what to make of it all.

There's a Jarman/German surname DNA project, which does seem to require permission to join. If you fill out the form and explain your situation, I'd imagine the administrator would let you in.

If you are searching for birth family, you may wish to register with [email protected]. There are search angels there who will help you, and they do not charge anything. Some are professional genealogists.

Have you registered with ISRR.net? Have you requested and received your non-identifying information from the agency or state where you were born and adopted?

It will be interesting to see what comes in when you get your Family Finder results!

Their searcher thinks he has found my birth mom on paper, however, finding her in person has been a challenge. He also provided me with a maternal family tree going back a couple of generations. I actually located my father listed on the birth certificate here in the states. However, genetic testing showed he wasn't my actual father. It's been an interesting journey. Hopefully, FF will provide some more clues.

I strongly recommend that you register with ISRR.net as it is international, and probably the largest adoptee/birth family registry out there. They will not really actively help you, but they will notify you if any birth family also registers, and they will match you. Any birth family member can register there, aunts, uncles, siblings, grandparents, parents, and siblings, so any adoptee should register their info there as many matches do occur at ISRR. You can also go to www.registry.adoption.com and plug in your date of birth and place of birth and search their registry for free. Just ignore the ads for pay search companies.

I don't know what year you were born, but back in the 40's, 50's and 60's, it was not uncommon for a birth mother to not list the correct name for the birth father, especially if the real birth father was married. I was born in 1956 in Binghamton, NY. My birth father's ethnic background is listed as Italian. I fear that I will never be able to learn much about my 1/2 Italian heritage because I do not have a name, and my birth mother's name is Jones...... and it may be an alias.

Your search does have some interesting twists! Hopefully FF will help and eventually YDNA, as more people get tested.
