Many people don't change the default User Preferences, so they won't match people unless they're both in the same project, and you have it currently selected. That's why it's a good idea to join as many relevant projects as you can: surname, geographic, haplogroup, etc....

The match has a surname different than my own, but his surname is known to be related to my surname, a few hundred years ago, and so I should join that family group.

That probably explains why, but in that case it seems odd that a match would appear at all, instead of appearing on one page but not on another page. That seems illogical.

Then again, if DNA could mutate, then perhaps logic could mutate, too.

There's another place matches might show up you might not be able to find. On the Ancestral Origins page, matches are completely anonymous. The only information about them is aggregate data about the countries of origin of their paternal origin.

Are you a member of any surname, geographic, or other projects? If your match is in one of those projects, elects not to match the entire database (or leaves that checked, I believe it's the default), and you don't have that project currently selected, they won't show up. On my My Maps page I see a reference to a match, but I cannot find that same match on my Y-DNA Matches page, at any level of match.

If a match shows up on one page, then it should show up on another, right?
