I understand very little of the talk on this forum, so I solicit your help. I know a lady who might be a distant cousin. We may have the same 5g-grandfather. I have gotten the Y-12 test (upgrade to 67 is underway). What test does my possible cousin need to get to verify the common ancestry? Y-67? Does it matter that she is female and I'm male if we are
both looking back to the same person on our father's side? Thanks.

Since this woman does not share your yDNA, your yDNA test won't help unless you can identify a direct male descendent of the possible male ancestor and have him test to see if you and he are directly related through that male ancestor. Family Finder (FF) would be better to possibly determine a relationship with her, but there's no guarantee that even if the two of you are related that you'll share sufficient autosomal DNA to identify that relationship. In other words, if the two of you took the FF test and it didn't show the two of you to be a match, that doesn't necessarily mean that you're not related. Additionally, if you do show to be related through FF, you'd still have to rely on a paper trail to determine how you're related.

Since she is female, she cannot take the Y-67 test. If she has a father, brother, paternal uncle or paternal male cousin who would be in the direct line of male ancestry, they could take the Y-67 test and she could use those results to confirm the relationship.
