What does "matches by Project" tell you?

The new tab "matches by project" is a little confusing to me.
I did a Y at 67 markers and belong to 5 overlapping projects. In my surname project it says I have only one match and last match received in April of 2006. When I select my surname project I see a longer list of what are called matches but the closest or rather most complete is a 67 match with a GD of 6, the next are a pair of 37 marker matches at a GD of 4. These top three matches are in all of my 5 projects at the same match level as are most of my other matches. When i look at the "Matches by Project" tab it shows various quantities of matches in all the projects but says only one in the surnames project.

It's helpful because it tells you the latest match by each project you've joined. When you just select "Matches" under Y-DNA, it only compares you to people who've set their preferences to "I want my matches to be set against the entire database," and the currently selected project (whichever radio button is selected).

Unfortunately, many people leave their preferences set at "I want to restrict the display of matches only to my Surname Project." You won't see them unless you're both in the same project, and you have that project selected. Therefore, checking the "Matches By Project" page can let you know if there are any new matches in other projects you've joined.

Perhaps you misunderstand the question. I know what the categories do but why does it say I have only one match in my surname project on the "by project page" while on the surname project page i have about 16 which is the same on the overlapping projects. Is the criteria for "Match" different?

When i look at my matches by each project separately they show pretty much the same names and quantities of matches at each marker level even clan Fraser, so why the difference on the "by project page"?

Mine list makes no sense. It's one of a number of FTDNA "features" that I take no notice of.

If you're set to be compared against the entire database, then you're going to see all matches on your Matches page, not just those in your project(s). But if you go to your User Preferences page and change the option to compare you only with the people in your projects (don't forget to click Save) and then go back to your Matches page, you'll see that your list of matches is now shorter and will change based on which project you have selected in the upper left "My Projects" section.

Thanks Elise I see what you mean. It sure makes it clear as to why all my Conner Project Surnames were not Conners LOL
