  • L3 mtDNA

    Hello,

    My HVR1 mutations of mtDNA are: 16048A, 16124C, 16223T, 16278T, 16362C.
    HVR2 mutations: 73G, 150T, 185A, 189G, 315.1C, 523-, 524-.
    HVR1 Haplogroup: L3. mathces an L3b.
Do not have the slightest idea what it means.

Can you tell me what this means?
    Your help appreciated.

Hi, I'm L3 also, HVR 1 16093C, 16189C, 16223T, 16320T, and 16519C. HVR 2 73G, 150T, 195C, 263G, and 315.1C. There seems that there is much work to be done on African Haplogroups. Much of the work tha thas been done has been in West Africa. From my own research I believe that I may be L3e. Looking around for matches I come closest to people from the Carribean. let me know if you are able to find some relevant research Cheryl

      Thank you Chyrl.
I have not done much research on the mtDNA haplogroup yet. But yes I should look at Africa to know more about my ancestors. I will like to know more about the L3 group. You are right. You have some one from the Caribbean. My parents are from the Caribbean but my maternal grandmother? Perhaps from Africa? Do not know.
Still looking, hoping for some clue.

        L3* and HVR1 Matching

        Hello,

I found a study online of the mtDNA haplogroups and HVR1 mutations found in three populations from Cameroon. One of the persons in the study had a haplogroup of L3e2b, and their HVR1 mutations were: 172; 183C; 189; 223; 320. FTDNA says my haplogroup is L3*, and my HVR1 mutations are: 16172C; 16183C; 16189C; 16223T; 16320T; 16519C. Aside from the 16519C mutation, could the other numbers be considered a match to the results of Cameroon(ian?) person?

Am I really in haplogroup L3e2b? Or am I just confused? I'm thinking of purchasing the mtDNA refine test, but I'm unsure if doing so will clarify things or just create more questions.

        I wish I understood more.

          African American with A haplotype

          Hello,

I came back as being a (A) haplotype through my mitochondrial DNA Meaning Native American. I took two test. The first said I was as follows:

          83% Sub-saharan African
          13% European
          4% Asian

          My mutations were at 16223t, 16290t, 16291t, 16319a, 16362c, 16519c.

Any one with similar results? I found many matches from Mexican indians, Quatemala, choctaw, Seminole, and several Puerto Ricans, one with an exact match.

My family hails from North Carolina.

seems close to these ones (all are more likely to be in L3b)

                I have three similar HVR I mutations: 16223T, 16362C, 16519C

M-haplogroup. I'm originally from Central Asia.

I'm trying to find matches with mutations 16227G and 16278T

M* is a catch-all designation that includes many mtDNA lines from Asia that either are not yet further subclassified, or more likely, are not identifiable from the comparisons made by FTDNA in their database. The mtDNA haplogroups were originally defined by RFLP testing, which is very different from the sequencing of HVR-1 and HVR-2 that is being used here. Your M* assignment means that your particular mutations fall within those most likely to be found in the M* supergroup overall. "Vraatyah" is an expert on this and can probably assign you to a subgroup based on your mutations. My wife has some mutations similar to yours (1629A, 16223T, 16274A, 16278T, 16362C) and Vraatyah was able to show from his database that similar patterns of mutation have been assigned to mtDNA haplogroup G2. FTDNA simply called this M*, like yours. To be certain of the correct assignment would require RFLP testing (which I have not seen offered commercially) or complete mtDNA sequencing (which is offered by FTDNA but at a very high price, and would still need expert interpretation to be useful). My wife is from Buryatia. You, like my wife, can probably conclude that your maternal line has been in Central or East Asia for a very long time and is related to East Asians. Some mtDNA lines, and even more male NRY DNA lines in Central Asia, show more connections to Western/European/Paleocaucasoid (choose your favorite politically correct term) haplogroups.

                      Thank You for your reply.

I took time and searched the net for my sequences. I found out that I belong to the "twig" of M* tree-G2a. This small lineage is restricted to Central Asia-Kazakhs, Kyrgyzs, Uighurs, Tadjiks and Uzbeks, also some neighboring nations but in small quantities.

I'm Kazakh with some recent Turkic admixture from Volga region.

"G2a lineages seems to be also restricted to
Central Asia. This haplogroup characterized by the motif
                      16 223T, 16 227G, 16 278T, and 16 362C"

Maybe I'm mistaken, but this is the closest and most plausible theory, which corresponds to my ethnical background.

Dentate: I browsed the topic where you posted your spouse'e DNA. I found a lot of similarities. In two articles about G2a-the only ones I have read so far, the authors indicated that this lineage is restricted to Central Asia, but in vraatyah's data base results I do not see anyone from Central Asians, rather Siberia.
                        "G2a is
highest among Central Asians (8.8%) and also above
3% in Tibetans and Ainu and rare or absent among
southern Chinese, Vietnamese, island Southeast Asians
                        (including Ryukyuans), and Siberians."

I entered my sequences in data base of mtDNA in order to compare with existing samples:

and got 16 results. 15 of them are Japanese and one is Georgian.
