  • mtDNA test results & Ethnic/Geographic Origins

The reason I ordered the mtDNA test was to prove/disprove "full-blooded" Native American great-great grandmother.

Before I ordered my kit, I read this on the FTDNA web page:
"...mtDNA: tests the ...female lineage of males (HVR1). ...
Ethnic and Geographic Origins: this test also allows you to identify your ethnic and geographic origins, both recent and far distant. Among other features, this test will also be able to indicate your Native-American Ancestry and which of the 5 major groups that settled in the Americans you are most likely to be descended from..."

I was notified of my test results, but don't know where/how to find the above info.

    Any help will be appreciated.

        Viofam,
The mtDNA haplogroup H is European. It is also the most common one from there. Roughly 40% of all Europeans are of this haplogroup.

          Thanks for the kind reply.
My results may show that my maternal mtDNA is not Native American but European, but I'm still not sure how "this test also allows (me) to identify (my) ethnic and geographic origins, both recent and far distant."
Also, what are the "other features"?

                Viofam,
FTDNA usually sends its customers several documents along with a certificate. These documents show you where your haplogroup originated from and where it is located today. These are your own personal ethnic and geographic origins. I think some of these documents are also located on your personal webpage on the website. I’m not sure about the “other features” but I know that if you have an exact match with another customer, they will notify you, if the other person has given permission. By the way, if you do a search on the internet on haplogroup h you can find a lot of interesting information.

I'm happy with my results, but want to be sure I'm not missing anything.

does family tree send you an email if any matches have been found? I had my mtdna test done months ago and recently checked my personal webpage, but still absolutely no matches whatsoever. Just curious how that works, if a match does happen?

                      Apriljb1,
If you signed the release form FTDNA will inform you of any matches with people that also signed the release form. I have no mtDNA matches after about two years. My dad had over twenty with his test result returns and more have been added over the last months.

                        hi,
thanks for the response, i did sign the form, but I guess I still don't have any matches wow...that is nuts that your dad had so many, yet you still don't have any! I'm just waiting for at least "one" match, so I can learn something from my results at least-other than i'm european which I knew before taking the test anyhow.
