  • What test tells you what % of Native a person is

I have been reading through the forum and have noticed that people
have the percentages listed under a certain group, for example
1 % Native, what test do you take to find out this information?

Family Finder but its in its beta phase and they do not have American Indian samples to compare to so the % given may not be accurate especially for those with indigenous ancestors. Is your family from the US, Canada, Mexico?

How far back can you trace? My family N Mex and TX. In Mexico Church records they listed race on marriage and baptisms up until the early 1800's. If your lucky the records might list tribe.

If your DNA matches the few indigenous samples they have from central and south America your % might show up in a Family Finder/Population finder test. I dont know if it would list all your possible indigenous %. It all depends on how far back your Indian ancestors were and if you inherited that DNA from them. If your MT-DNA is indigenous you would have to have an Indian ancestor within the past 500 years before European invasion.

I am stuck on an 1839 Maternal Grandmother because she used a few different names so I am doing more research on her before I can go any further.

Try to find Catholic Church records in your area. Given your location Im guessing your ancestors have Spanish names? If so the Spaniards gave people a few names. Most popular first name given was Jose ( John) or Maria (Mary) sometimes just listed as MA on records. Then they would give you a middle and last name unless you had a Spaniard marry into the family to acquire a surname through marriage or birth of child. My family drops their first names after they are baptized and went by their middle names given. Its not easy to research when they drop names they were given at birth or by baptism.

23andme will give you a percentage of Asian in their ancestry painting. Since native Americans have their roots in Asia they use it as a reference. It is reasonably priced but bear in mind they charge a $9 monthly fee for one year on top of the initial testing fee. It will give you a Y an mtdna (single panel) and the admixtures per cent. Personally I am skeptical of any percent readings but others believe in then

PF is now supposed to be the same as 23andMe. Most of the % I have seen from 23andMe results are pretty much the same as PF on % from those I know who have taken both tests.

Population Finder is the % part of the Family Finder Test. Family Finder matches you up with cousins that share the same DNA as you have inherited from your ancestors. The PF part of the test is % although the test does not tell you which % goes to what ancestor. You need paper for that

If you have Spanish names look to the Catholic Church for records

                          Jose means Joseph.
                          Juan means John.

Family Tree DNA's main page has Family Finder/Population Finder.
                            Population Finder has the percentages.

Unlock your family ancestry and discover your origins and much more with Family Finder - our top selling DNA test!

I haven't done the PF test.

My 17% (about 1/6) Native American comes from the AncestryByDNA test (originally by DNAPrint Genomics) that is now done by DNA Diagnostics Center.

My 00.00% Asian was from 23andme. 23andme puts any and all Native American ancestry into the "Asia" category. They recently changed my 00.00 to 00.14, which is less than one percent.
