Can 4th cousins test verify common ancestor??

Here's the up tree: Me (DC, male) -> my father (GC) -> his mother (CC) -> her father (BM, who was adopted at birth, parents unknown) -> his alleged father (SM).

Here's the down tree: This man SM had only one 'official' surviving child -> (CM, female) who had only one child (AA, male). There are offspring down 2-3 generations from AA who would be available for DNA testing.

I would like to compare my DNA to one of AA's offspring if the tests could be at all conclusive to verify my biological connection to SM, my alleged g-g-grandfather.

Can this be done? Thanks for helping a novice.

Dan, for a Y-DNA test you need a direct paternal line and for mtDNA you need a direct maternal line. Just looking at your "up tree" you have a mixed paternal/maternal line, so you can't even find your grandmother's (CC) DNA using either test. You don't provide enough information about the "down tree," but without the up tree it probably doesn't matter.

The result of these DNA tests will not be *conclusive to verify a biological connection to SM". Even if there was a perfect match (say a 25/25 result),with the other person being tested, it could only 'indicate the possibility that there MAY be a connection, only IF they had exactly the same surname. You need to go back and read the reply you received from Bill Hurst.

Based on your information you do not have an all male line between the people of interest. The Y-DNA CAN NOT prove anything. Please read Bill's message again. He answered your question.

well you are a genealogist right?
go find SM's dad and see is SM has brothers and if they have a male line they would match you if he is your dads dad
time to do more work

I recently had a person contact me from Canada. She believes that she is related to me by way of my grandfather. There is a possible affair involved and she just wants to find out who she is. So anyway, she has offered to pay for the test. My father and I have both agreed to help her with a swab.
Who between I and my father has the best chances of giving her the results she seeks? The grandfather or uncle would be father and brother to my dad, AND can she get a definated answer if only I do the swab?

By the way...who is searching for the Denning name? I have one that turned into a Denney name..same person.

your dad would give the best because you dont carry the ydna that will tie the males together but she needs a male too
she needs some male decendent of the suspect or some decendent of a ancestor of the suspect in other words his or his brothers or fathers ydna
and incase they dont match a 2nd male to make sure this guy or his wife didnt fool around more
stuff happened

if the first one matches then you can say the connection is there
you can join the denning group
