  • Deep Clade Question 2

Prior to the recent change in nomenclature I had been determined as R-L48.
I was offered at that stage, further subgroup tests.
    I have tested negative for L44, L46, L148 and L188.
The only test left would appear to be for L47.
Oddly enough, the estimated time for completion of the test has been extended by a week.
I am reluctant to allow my ignorance to show, but if L47 is the only sub-branch remaining for testing, should I not be awarded that by default?
If I test negative for L47 then I will have tested negative for all the subgroups of L48, which would beg the question of why I was offered that deep clade in the first place.
The only other explanation if such was the case could it be that i am not L48 after all? That seems hard to believe after so many predictions and confirmations.
Any other observations would be welcome.

    Tom:

Just because you don't have any of the subclades doesn't mean that you aren't a part of the clade.

Think of it this way- two sons are born, one of which develops a new mutation (snp). They both have sons, and so on. The one with the new mutation (and his line) forms their own subclade, whereas the other son (and his line) have the "ancestral" clade. In this case, the ancestral clade is R-L48.

    hope that helps,

If you don't belong to one of the subclades, you will describe your haplogroup as L48*. The asterisk means "tested for all known subclades & none were positive".

I think that for most haplogroups with known subclades, anywhere from 30% to 50% or more will not test positive for any of the known subclades.

          Subclades.

          Thanks , Tim.
          That pretty well covers everything!
That bit about the "*" is very interesting as well, I've often wondered what it meant, I don't feel up to spelling it at the minute!
