  • Genetree's TMRCA estimates

I shoved my Y-DNA results on Genetree and waited for matches.

    Got quite a few.

One at 29/32 shows a TMRCA back 21 generations.

Two more at 28/32 states 30 and 32 generations respectively.

Is this about right? And, if so, how can one ever hope to document them?

(Those of noble blood will be better off of course. But there aren't that many of us are there?)

Its my understanding that more than 1 or maybe 2 steps away is not much use in finding any genealogical data, unless you are freakily lucky or its fast mutating markers (I think?).

The 29/32 is 3 steps away, and thus 21 generations, or roughly 500 years. Its not entirely unfeasible to find a documentary trail that far back, but I would estimate most people are looking at the 100 - 200 years (4 to 8 generations) sort of gap.

For what its worth, I am looking at the same sort of matching - ie not very close. I guess its a waiting game to see if anyone closer within the same paternal tree does a test and releases the results.

I'd be curious to know how many other people are in the same boat
