I think the MRCA between I1 & I2 lived in the middle of the last Ice Age, so I would say they aren't closely related.

Maybe I1 and I2b1 are closely related. I don't know. But the only differense is the "2b" in the middle. lol

My family came from the British Isles but we are of Norman descent...Haplogroup I1. Much of what has already been posted about the Vikings/their descendants settling in France and elsewhere in England, Ireland and Scotland explains this.

Thanks for the replys ! Yes, I got Scandinavia from the Family tree dna website. But I think it listed others. And it looks like England is one of those. That makes sense. I wonder how much i would find out from the Deep clad test or the y67 yest ? Which would be more beneficial ?

Your family probably did come from England. If your YDNA is matching Scandinavians, then your paternal English line was probably descended from a Norman. Normans were Scandinavians that took over a part of France and later on they invaded England.

Years ago my maternal grandmother told me that her line was Norman.

Who is telling you that your predicted haplogroup (I2b1) is from Scandinavia? Is that FTDNA or eupedia.com? If it's eupedia.com, I would take that with a grain of salt. That site is known to make claims about the ethnic make-up of haplogroups which goes beyond what scientists are willing to say at this time.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the I haplogroup, so I'll just quote what the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) writes about I2b1 on their page on the I haplogroup. "I2b1-M223 et al occurs in Britain and northwest continental Europe. I2b1a-M284 occurs almost exclusively in Britain, so it apparently originated there and has probably been present for thousands of years." Since you wrote that your haplogroup is predicted, you can't be sure that it actually is I2b1, although it probably is. Also, look at the haplogroup tree on the page I linked to and you'll see that there are subclades of I2b1 (I2b1a, etc.). It's possible that you're in one of those subclades, but you'll need a deep clade test to confirm that.

That page also has links to various studies and genetic genealogy websites which can give you more information.

As far as how it's possible that your family is from England, but your haplogroup is possibly "Scandinavian," think of how many different ethnic groups have been involved in England's history. You have Celts, Romans, Angles and Saxons from what's now Germany and Vikings from Scandinavia. So it is possible that the deep ancestry (more than 1,000 years ago) of your paternal line is from outside England, perhaps Scandinavia.
