How to extract a paternal (or maternal) line GEDCOM from ancestry.com's GEDCOM file?

Apologies if this has been explained before. My clumsy attempt using the search engine to find previous relevant threads didn't turn up an answer to my question.

My family tree is on ancestry.com. It offers to produce a GEDCOM file - but I don't see any options for narrowing down the entire tree to a simpler paternal or maternal line-only version for uploading here on FamilyTreeDNA.com.

I downloaded mine and I can read it in Excel. It's not clear to me how I could manually edit it down - it's way too complicated for that.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well, never mind. I just went ahead and did it, and I see that FTDNA does the work for me. OK, that's cool.

Now I see what others have been talking about. In Firefox, there's no "mouseover" function at all. In IE, there is, but while it shows date of birth, and death, it reads "unknown" for place of birth and death (even when the data are in the file)

alas, nothing's ever easy, is it? the GEDCOM as viewed on FTDNA is giving my ggf's name wrong. it's pulling "Charles A Holmes" out of the 1900 Census entry for "residence" and plugging that in as his name, which it is not. His name, and the way I have him listed in the family tree is CHARLES C ERICHSON. After immigrating he went by "Charles E Holmes" but the only instance of "Charles A Holmes" is in that 1900 Census record, and why does it choose to use that for his name in the GEDCOM tree???? argggh.

When you upload your tree, go down the list of names and pick the one you want to start with. (click on it)
I could not find the send icon with IE8 so I just hit the return.

Chose the home person and the gedcom does not show places of birth. Nothing to do with browser.

Not sure what you mean here. I was choosing me, the home person. Reading your msg, I went in and changed that, chose my father instead. It didn't make any difference. In IE, i see the box, the dates are there, but no places. In Firefox, no nothing - no mouseover box at all.

ysearch's gedcom upload features still not working either... maybe FTDNA and ysearch should form a partnership so they could work on this... ;-)

I'm going to re-do my gedcom.
I don't get birth/death places either.

I just received FamilyTreeMaker 2011 - upgraded from 6.0 - with an online coupon I found, I got it for $22.00 with free shipping. I haven't tried uploading my gedcom yet, but perhaps the newer version will work better.

Wonder if the problem is too much data? And wonder when FTDNA will do a fix.

My original MtDNA gedcom which worked, was simple. The new ones include collateral lines.
