  • Different surname matches on 37 markers

I'm new please forgive me if I don't give all the information one might need to answer my question because I'm not entirely sure what is relevant and what isnt, so here is my situation:

My research is on hubby's family under the surname Byers, and a little history is that I'm stuck on his 4th greatgrandfather, William (born 1805-1810). William's mother seems to be the head of the household in the census I can find, 1810 and 1830 and is living with William in 1840 and 1850. I began to have the feeling that maybe his mother wasn't married (there are no other Byers/various spellings in the area at all during those times) and SHE was the Byers.

So we decided to test hubby's great uncle (I thought getting the oldest person living would be better than testing hubby?) So I joined the Byers group and we did the 37 marker test and the predicted group is R1b1b2. None of the match a "Byers" here or on ysearch. I have 3 different 36/37 matches with a completely different surname, Crane (the mutation is in CDYb and is off by 1).

I looked last night on the surname for those matches is prevalent in the area I'm searching. I realize several scenarios could have taken place, a NPE, and adoption etc.

    My questions are these:
    1. Would upgrading to the 67 markers help?
    2. Does having that kind of match, with the mutation where it is, give the high probability that William's father was a Crane?
    3. What else should I be looking at?

    My ysearch ID is MA4XM

I appreciate any guidance, and if I left out any needed information, I'm sorry, just ask me.

CDY is a faster mutating marker, so it does not really tell you much at this stage.
38-67 panel has some slow markers and is usually quite stable.
A good match at 67 would be a good indication of a common ancestor.

(forgive my ignorance) are you saying I don't have a good match now? I thought I understood the that 36/37 with a difference in that marker was a good match.

No, I'm not saying a 37 match is not good, it is, but if you want more information on how close that match is, within a more recent time frame then a good match at 67 should be of help.
If the 37 match was with someone of your surname it would be great, but it is not and you want to clarify the connection with another surname.

ahh ok. Now when you say "more recent" what time frame are we talking about? My paper trail (unless of course there is something nobody knows) appears solid from the person tested back to the person that has always been in question (4 generations back from him)

I'm lost on comparing time frames and results

I think the general thinking is that a 67 test will refine the match within the last ~200 years, ie if you are related in the last 200 years you should have a very good match at 67 markers.
eg; I have 2 relatives tested who have a common ancestor born c1748, they have a 66/67 match. Co incidentally they mismatch on CDYb. They are identical on the 38-67 panel. Some men in my surname projects have only 1 mutation in the 38-67, while others have none.

But a close match at 67, and a link to the same area, and the possibility that Byers was the maternal name, not the paternal etc.. will give much more weight to the connection between the families.
Have the other men tested to 67?
