I'm new
please forgive me if I don't give all the information one might need to answer my question because I'm not entirely sure what is relevant and what isnt, so here is my situation:
My research is on hubby's family under the surname Byers, and a little history is that I'm stuck on his 4th greatgrandfather, William (born 1805-1810). William's mother seems to be the head of the household in the census I can find, 1810 and 1830 and is living with William in 1840 and 1850. I began to have the feeling that maybe his mother wasn't married (there are no other Byers/various spellings in the area at all during those times) and SHE was the Byers.
So we decided to test hubby's great uncle (I thought getting the oldest person living would be better than testing hubby?) So I joined the Byers group and we did the 37 marker test and the predicted group is R1b1b2. None of the match a "Byers" here or on ysearch. I have 3 different 36/37 matches with a completely different surname, Crane (the mutation is in CDYb and is off by 1).
I looked last night on the surname for those matches is prevalent in the area I'm searching. I realize several scenarios could have taken place, a NPE, and adoption etc.
My questions are these:
1. Would upgrading to the 67 markers help?
2. Does having that kind of match, with the mutation where it is, give the high probability that William's father was a Crane?
3. What else should I be looking at?
My ysearch ID is MA4XM
I appreciate any guidance, and if I left out any needed information, I'm sorry, just ask me.
