I only just now read this thread. I'm online now. I think you have a great chance of getting definite Native American tribe matches in addition to Latin American diaspora matches because you're Guatemalan. I would bet that you'd also match Spain and probably some Middle Eastern/Arab populations too (because there were a lot of Moors in Spain). I have a lot of Latin American diaspora matches (top one is Sergipe, Brazil), but I currently don't match a pure tribe (I have low matches to 'mixed' Native Americans in Minnesota). DNA Tribes has data for various tribes in Central America and you have a good chance of matching at least one, maybe all, if you have a high amount of Amerindian genes. I'm looking forward to reading your matches, if you post them.

Ooh I never thought of Middle Eastern/Arab populations..I'm really excited! I just did the swabs for DNA Tribes so it's in the mail! I also am doing my FTDNA swabs today..i'm doing my 4 hour wait right now. I will definitely post my matches!

I didnt really think about surprises..I guess I've assumed it'll be pretty straightforward but I love surprises! I tried doing the leg work for a family tree with my dad's help. My father went to his village in Guatemala in Nov, where is grandma was from, her name was Vicenta Pop..but it's so hard as a lot of people in that region don't certify births and deaths..its all word of mouth. So I figured might as well use science!

Oh okay! I tend to understand info when its explained versus reading..its just the way I grasp things better. thanks for ur help

I'm curious as to how the markers work in DNA tests..Tribes has the option of, I think, 15 for 21.. I just bought the latter. What are the benefits? I'm trying to track down more detail on my American Indian heritage.

If your connection is to a Canadian or western US tribe, and not too many generations back, it might show up in your results. If your connection is to an eastern US tribe, probably not. http://www.dnatribes.com/pops-amer.html
