  • Lack of mtDNA matches ?

Would one of the more knowledgeable members be able to exxplain why I have over 500 matches at various marker levels for my y-DNA, but precisely none for my mtDNA. I am male and I opted to take the more expensive Y-DNA67+mtDNAPlus test. Thank you!

It depends on your mtdna haplogroup. There are a few possibilities.

Perhaps your haplogroup, unlike your mtdna, is not very common in Europe. For instance, I belong to U1a, which is not particularly frequent in Europe, and I have no HVR1 matches.

Or perhaps you have a very recent mutation, ie a mutation that happened a few generations ago.

Finally, there are many more mtdna lineages around. Mtdna can be more diverse than the Y because in male-dominated societies, mtdna is more likely to survive than the Y. (In other words, dominant males can take over, killing or simply out-breeding other males.)

I waited more than four years for an HVR1 match and that recently came through FTDNA. Long story short, if there are no comparables in the databases there is no possibility of a match.

There are worse outcomes, you might have pulled a perfect HVR match to a person who did not wished to be contacted.

            I've got the same problem.

            Several people just "disappeared".

They stated that it was due to a "filtering issue" and that it would "soon" be fixed.

            I hope so.

                No Matches on U5b2a2

My mtDNA Full Sequence results came through in January 2015, and I too was disappointed that I apparently had no matches. But on investigation by a volunteer, it seems I have mutations that add a 'c' to my haplogroup, i.e. U5b2a2c - as yet an unrecognised designation. With that addition, I have 1 anonymous match at Phylotree, and 1 match at GenBank, maybe they are one and the same. Also I have been advised that the mutations could mean that when, and if, I do finally get more matches, our closest common ancestor may not be too far in the past to be identified. That of course is assuming I can get my maternal line traced further back than it is at present, I am stuck with a parentless 4 x gr. Grandmother born in 1789.!!!

                  Hello Babushka,my 2nd cousin tested as U5b2a2 and R1b1b2a1a1*
His mother and father, both deceased, were African American and Czech.
We are still trying to figure out who this U5b2a2 ancestress was.

Hi Inge Maria, Your ancestress was most likely Czech, or other European. My ancestors are all European, though I have not found any beyond the shores of the UK yet. I finally got my 'c' designation on GEDmatch and Phylotree, but it takes FTDNA forever to catch up.
