Both Dan & Hugo are in the haplotype U2.
The HVR1 part is identical for Dan & Hugo.
The HVR2 parts have four differences:
Hugo has these differences: 309.1D and 309.2C are present, and he has 523. 1C and 523.2A.
Dan does not have 309.1D and 309.2C, and he has 524.1C and 524.2A
I have read that having identical HVR1 parts means there is a common maternal line ancestor.
If Mary is the common maternal line ancestor of both, I would expect less differences in the HVR2 part.

    2. Family tradition is that Edith, the possible daughter of Mary, and the great-grandmother of Hugo, is part or all native american. I think that fact that the haplotype of Dan and Hugo is U2 seems to point out that their common maternal line ancestor is not of native american ancestry along that maternal line. Is that a reasonable conclusion?

I thank you in advance for your thoughts.
    Hi,

The insertions at position 309 have been known to be different even between siblings. With an FGS test, FTDNA would say two people were exact matches even if they differed at that position.

FTDNA recently starting assigning 523 insertions instead of 524. Absolutely no difference. Eventually they will go back and change them all to 523.

I don't know enough about U2 to rule out Native American ancestory, but I think it's usually European.
