  • Slavic/Russian DNA

    Hi,
Just curious as to the DNA make up of slavic peoples and Russians? I've been tyring to read up on it after DeCodeMe placed Mum half way between Western Europeans and Eastern Europeans/Russians and said her father was of that origin, but it seems to me that Russians have a complex ethnic make up?
I don't understand enough about the history of Eastern Europe/Russia-who were the Slavs exactly? Is there a difference between Slavs in Russia and in the rest of Eastern Europe? How do the Turkic groups fit into Eastern European/Russian DNA?
    Thanks.

Autosomal DNA studies generally find European Russians quite close to Belarusians, Ukrainians, and Poles. All of them are fairly close genetically to other northern Europeans.

yDNA magnifies the differences greatly, of course, but still, European Russians are, like Belarusians, Ukrainians, and Poles, roughly 50% R1a1.

      Hi,
Thanks for that. So if my Mum gets East (11%) and South Asian (22%) results with AbDNA and DNATribes, how might this fit in with Russians based on DeCodeMe's results of her being of Eastern European or Russian ancestry?

        old saying re: Russians

When I was a lot younger, I recall an old saying that went: "Scratch a Russian and reveal the Tarter."

          Hi,
Would Tatars have South Asian DNA?

            Hi Burto,

You may want to take a look at this page if you haven't already.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatars

It might answer your question about Tatar DNA.

            Good Luck in your searches.

              Hi,
Thanks for that..it says they came from the Gobi, so it's doubtful they ahd South Asian DNA. I did think the East Asian scores would explain somekind of Tatar/Mongolian influence, but trying to find an explanation for the South Asian results based on DeCodeMe saying there is Eastern European or Russian ancestry is a mystery.

South Asian means from India, Pakistan etc. I think your mom's SA may come from either ancient migarations into Europe or from some unknown Roma ancestors in more "recent" times.

Hi Burto. Did you ever see the tv show about dna admixture in England. Someone posted about it on here last year. I found part of it on youe tube.
Some English people have some South Asian.

Maybe I can make a new thread, that has the appropriate title, for all these links.

On the other hand, your Mums 11% East Asian could mean that her non-English father had 22% East Asian.

                    Hi,
I'm hoping that when DeCodeMe add their Eastern European populations to their map of kinship, it might narrow things down a bit more and maybe explain the South Asian matches.

I did find this on Wikipedia after wondering who these people were:
n the recent study: "Worldwide Human Relationships Inferred from Genome-Wide Patterns of Variation (2008)", geneticists using more than 650,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) samples from the Human Genome Diversity Panel, found that the Adygei (Adyghe) population has mixed lineages from Central/South Asian, and European populations."

On the map of kinship, Mum is half way between "Western Europe" on one side, and the Adygei and Russian sample on the other. She is closer to Adygei.

                      RE Adygei

Look where Adygei is. It is just north-west of the Caucuses Mountains. It was probably a route that horse-mounted peoples took over the millenia in their migrations toward the west.

The Achili paper on Berbers and Saamis use some samples from Adygei in their tree chart.

                        Hi,
Thank you for responding to my post, but I don't understand what you are suggesting?

my 12 markers matched up with someone from czech republik and since only 400-something people from there have been tested, that one jumps to the top of my ancestral origins page.

Hi Burto. Maybe the Slavic and South Asian is from an American whose heritage was Russian Gypsy (politically correct name is Roma or Romany, but that makes me think of Rome, Italy and/or Romania). Maybe Kazakhstan? Or Tajikistan? Or maybe Romanian Gypsy? Romanians look Italian. Or Ukrainian or Albanian?
