I-M253 (formerly known as I1a) is the typical and most frequent Scandinavian haplogroup (I guess your forum name says it all). In fact, its presence outside Scandinavian countries is often, jokingly or otherwise, attributed to Viking invasions.

I am not an expert on this haplogroup. I think Ken Nordtvedt has done a lot of work on this haplogroup, in particular finding several subgroups based on STR analysis. I don't know if he participates in this forum, perhaps he does participate in others (eg:

    Newbie Question

    Hi all,

I have just received my 12 marker Y-DNA results. I m a complete newbie to this DNA-stuff, someone out there who can help me understanding my results?

The result says that my predicted haplogroup is I1, and the shorthand is I-M253...

    Thanks in advance!
