  • Y DNA matches and surname

I have several people listed as exact matches for 25 markers. All but one have the same surname - Murphy. My father never knew who his father was, so our surname was taken from his mother ... Emery.

Here's my question ... with eight people having the same surname being a 25 point match for my Y DNA, can I safely assume that this name (Murphy) is likely my grandfather's true paternal family name?

Yes, if your haplogroup is relatively rare, no if your haplogroup is common, such as R1b.

      r1b1 ... yes, that's me

Wouldn't the fact that all but one exact matches having the same surname be an incredible coincidence?

Possibly. But since you are an R1b(R1b1b2?) type then you are in a common Haplogroup..... More markers might help narrow down the possibilities.

I have one 37/37 match and nothing else past that but some 32/37 and 31/37 (and I think another 30/37) matches.... which are quite far off from each other.

I don't find my Haplotype (unique set of alleles) in many other people of my Haplogroup...... I wonder what thats all about.

        Good luck in your searches
