  • Pros and cons...

    Price reduction from 1,000.00-400.00.
    Stable company.
You recieved alot of information for the price.
    The abilty to genome share.
    Community posting.
    Updates.
I was shocked that I recieved my results withing 2 weeks of the sample arriving at the lab! Like someone stated maybe the technician tripped and my dna sample went flying and landed on that weeks batch! But there are some people waiting 10-12 weeks! Good luck... I have 2 issues with 23andme : 1. They don't paint the X chromosome and 2. the underestimation of Asian in people who have Native American heritage... Several people here including me were given 100% European results... Maybe it needs to be revised...

So DeCodeMe are going the same way as DNAPrint?

Can't say, but they were recently looking for additional funding. As you may have heard the entire country of Iceland is bankrupt due to overleveraging in their financial markets.

        • My mtDNA haplogroup is T2 with about a dozen (HVR1 and 2HVR2) matches. I have some matches to T2b(I'm not sure if I'm T2b).

Would the 23andme test narrow these down? Could i compare the 23andme test to someone elses FTDNA FGS or subclade?

I'm also R1A1. I guess that would give my any of the ftdna unlikely R1a1 subclades if they occured?

So the test does not pick up Native American ancestry or is it lumped in with Asian?

          • No Native category...

It has been said that 23andme underestimates ethnic percentages. It will not say Native American it will say Asian...Which can mean exactly that or it can stand in for Native American...There are 2 of us here who have Native American ancestry that showed 100% European..Of course they only painted the autosomal and not the X. DeCodeMe showed that I had Asian..Autosomal 6% and X 9%. Which I take as Native....

              • I just ordered from 23andme. It charged me a little more for fedex shipping. I didn't see a regular shipping choice and I wanted to order it right then. Its a little strange they dont seem to have a phone number thats obvious.

Are there about to be any major upgrades or changes?

I suppose I will be happy if they dont go under like dnaprint and just give the current results.

                • If my mtDNA is T2 can the 23andme test give me a subclade that will cut down my HVR1and2 matches with ftdna?

I basicaly picked 23andme over the ftdna FGS mtdna because it has the autosomal testing and might also give me some mtDNA information.

                  • Sorry for so many posts here but I just remembered a seperate question

When I ordered I didnt enter anything under discount code. I think that's only if you have Parkinsons right?

My grand father did have Parkinsons but I do not so I would imagine that does not qualify .

                    • Native American ancestry estimation

Evidently there is a new feature at 23andMe that allows testees to estimate Native American ancestry:

                      • No recent heritage...

As far as I know mine is more than 5 generations ago, it says, its not likely.. But it doesn't say you don't have ancestry after the 5th generation...Which I do. Some people are assuming because it doesn't show up then you don't have any heritage at all. Which is not true.. Alot of us are comming up 100% European...I do have alot of females with no last names in the colonial time frame in the eastern states...I am researching these females who were my grandmothers past the 5th generation. Maybe there are more lines from different tribes...I have ancestors in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvannia, Maine, Massachsutts, Delaware, New Jersey. I have a possible 2nd connection to the Potowomeck through my fathers side... Mary and Keziah family intermarried. Very complicated. Having a hard time getting the verification I need to prove it... I have written to 5 different people and they have never responded... Maybe they have passed on or no longer are doing research...

                            Hey All,

I was wondering if anyone on here who is also hazel eyed has received their 23andME results? If so what did it say about your eye colour? By hazel I mean a mixture of brown and green. Mine are brown around the pupil and green on the outside.

With one blue-eyed parent and one brown-eyed parent, and my siblings all either one color or the other, I'm the intermediate. My results are: Genotype AG -- In Europeans, 56% chance of brown eyes; 37% chance of green eyes; 7% chance of blue eyes.

My eyes are dark gray-blue with only a few flecks of brown.

                              Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim it seems likely then that my results will probably be similar to yours.
