Hi,
Just wondering does 23andme include X testing? Also how indepth is it's MtDNA..I know I'm H but that's it!
Has anyone done their autosomal test?
Given the price I was thinking of doing it.

Yes, 23andMe tests close to 14,000 SNPs on the X chromosome.

It tests about 2,000 of the most common SNPs out of the 16,569 bases in the whole mtDNA molecule. That's enough to assign you to an H subclade, but it doesn't cover any "private" mutations you might have. It takes a complete mtDNA sequence from FTDNA to do that.

If they are different, then do they just appear as numbers and customers do what they like with them, or does the company analyze them and say what they show?
Basically my Mum is trying to find out about the ancestry of her unknown US Dad and we want to use whatever ways we can. We have no male relatives on that side to test, to autosomal tests seem the only way.
Have done AbDNA, results on my signature, be nice to compare.

Right now, there's very little interpretation that can be done with X chromosome markers. We're in an exploratory phase, I guess you could say. The concept of haploblocks applies to both autosomes and X chromosomes.

If you find some candidates who might be fairly close relatives of your mum's Dad (say 2nd cousins or closer), you could use the 23andMe test to help confirm or rule out your hypothesis. But I don't think a 23andMe test in isolation would be especially useful to you right now, although you could use it as a cross-check on your AncestryByDNA results.

So with 23andme I wouldn't get a list of X "haploblocks" like they do at FtDNA? Would I have to go with FtDNA?
Due to finances I want to find a test that will be the most "reflective" of Mum's ancestry.
23andme does a similar job to AbDNA and DNATribes, right? I saw on the site, a break down of each chromosome and the ancestry for each one, a bit like AbDNA, so would that be a good indicator of ancestry?

I remember seeing her on a tv show on PBS with someone named Gates about admixture testing and mtdna & ydna testing. Others on the show were an actor named Cheedle and singer Tina Turner and a woman astronaut, etc.

I never saw that particular show, but 23andMe was on her show in mid november and, after that, it took longer and longer for people to receive their results. The company's PR person acknowledged this was the case. I read about this ongoing "soap opera" in the DNA Forums.

I can believe that. 23andme were probably flooded with orders. I think Oprah has millions of viewers in the US. Maybe her show is shown around the world.

The PBS show I saw was years ago. 2005 or 2006. That is how I first heard of admixture tests. Then it was re-aired.

Just recieved my 23andme dna kit today. Hope to send it out Monday. Not sure why they lowered the price but I was happy to get it for only 400.00. Turn around time is 10 weeks. Now the wait begins... Will be interesting to see what my ancestry painting results show... DeCodeMe gave me 6% Asian, 2% African and 92% on my Autosomal dna. Would have been nice if 23andme had the x painting in place when I ordered...

What's X painting? Is that like their autosomal admixture text but on the X chromosome?
That would be interesting for my Mum...she has 2 of those (woo-hoo!) and it might actually suggest something about her father's ancestry.....will it show where each X comes from in the world?
Do you think you can upgrade if it's not in place when your test is analyzed?
I wonder if the upgrade would be charged?

That's good news. At first I thought you got your results today, but then carefully read and saw you received your kit. Painting is a good description.

Yes, they can do the same thing with the X chromosome just like they do for the autosomal...Not sure why they didn't do that before they put it on the market.. How will it be done for people who have already done the autosomal and want to just get the results for the X chromosome..Don't know how much they would charge, not sure how they can seperate it from what you have already had done. I would be willing to repay the 400.00 for the X.. It means that much to me..

I have read that 23andme is tighter. They are not as generous with their percentages. There are people who are comming up European with this company...that had Asian and African on the DeCodeMe test..Will have to see what I get..

FTDNA, at present, offers markers (STR's) for one haploblock (DXS10074,75,79). That STR block falls within a region of linkage disequilibrium defined by SNP's. So, from 23andMe you would get results that would show you your SNP blocks. There ought to be some correlation between STR and SNP blocks but that cannot be known in detail until many more people test both X SNP's and X STR's.

23andMe compares SNP's to the HGDP-CEPH database, a much larger database than that available for STR's. The only data for the STR block is for German populations and what may be learned from comparisons to others posted on the DNA-F Xmatch online database.

However the cost for FTDNA's STR's, especially just the three, is far less than that of 23andMe. It would be worthwhile to do both.
