  • Wife's Autosomals and Omnipop Scores

My wife's autosomals came in today. She tells folk she has a French/Italian background (what her adoptive parents told her). I put the results through Omnipop. Some larger scores of interest are: Madeira Archipelago 9.06 +18; PC/BT Caucasian 8.27E+17; Albanians (Northern Italy) 5.31E+17; Desasth Brahmin (India) 5.52E+19; Tunisian 5.10E+18; NCSBI African American 4.38E+20; NCSBI Caucasian 3.35E+18.

Does this appear like a result for someone who is French/Italian? What is a PC/BT Caucasian? Any help would be appreciated.

My wife's mtDNA is M* but more likely M1 when low resolution matches are compared.

A PC/BT Caucasian is likely an American Caucasian whose DNA got collected, probably by law enforcement.

Your wife's Omnipop match scores are pretty weak, so she doesn't match any population in Omnipop very well. Omnipop scores should be ranked by E# - the smaller the E#, the better the match, then by the decimalic number where the smaller the number the better the match. Based on what you wrote your wife's best match is to North Italian Albanians followed by PC/BT Caucasians.

If your wife is primarily European why not run her profile on ENFSI the European databse: www.str-base.org

On ENFSI the smaller E# rule holds but on this database the larger decimalic number is better.

      small victory

Thanks for helping explain the confusion. The data I submitted to the European database showed only one small difference in the E#, again in Italy. It went the whopping distance from 11 to 10 on the Balding and Nichols FST and the NRC II Upper Bound Confidence Intervals. My wife was told that her father was from Northern Italy so there's a bit of an encouraging result there.

And on ENFSI was her secondary match to Toulouse or Lille?

Actually, there was nothing remarkable about the numbers in the France regions. The only other E 10 on the results page was the Balding and Nichols FST column for Netherlands.

On the original Omnipop, Italians didn't even register--all zeros. Also, here's another result:

            Oriya Brahmin (India) (61) 1.70E+18

Several Indian results had numbers on with +18 and +19 with very low decimalic numbers along with Argentina at 1.60E+18. Also there were a couple Hispanic +18's.

Well, you might run each allele, one-by-one on ENFSI to see which are relatively more Italian and/or which relatively more French. Construct one or more synthetic profiles (French and/or Italian) from the results and run them. Won't prove a thing but such combinations (and many more) are possible. On ENFSI a single allele will run as a homozygous allele at the locus and while that creates a distortion it will nevertheless be indicative of relative incidence.

Northern French can blend into Belgian and Southern French can blend into Spanish.

Fair number of Ialian descent in Argentina. You can Google demographics for any population. Hispanics are a blend that can vary from population to population.

I'm really getting confused. I got my own autosomal scores and plugged them into Omnipop. First I got results only for the same scattered countries that my wife had. I actually scored higher for Albanians from Northern Italy than she did (both were our top scores). Later I tried to put in numbers on the coloured rectangles. I got numbers for every ethnicity mentioned but if I looked at the E-scores and the others my highest matches were all Oriental. I did the European database and got Estonian far and above anything else. This seemed to make more sense, although I wished they had Russia, Romania. Lithuania and the Ukraine also listed because they seemed to have the closest matches to my Y-DNA tests. Oh well, now to more Encyclopedia Browning...

I assume you are certain you are reading the E-scores correctly.

If you are not certain, post them here. Just one of the four columns will do.

                    Regards,
                    Jim

These results are not in numerical order. They are from a results column that is to the left of the actual results column. If 'Show results' automatically takes you to these then scroll to the right where all matches are properly ranked with lowest E#'s at the top.

I don't know anything about autosomal tests. But the "Estonian" label might refer to the once widespread Baltic-Finns, now absorbed by Baltic-Slavs and other Slavs and Germans. You might find related threads on the "DNA Forums" site.

My non-biological mother who adopeted me is Estonian and my adoptive dad is Finnish. My haplogroups are E1b1a1a2 which came from the Balkans and U5 which is generalized around the Atlantic rim (at least my nearest matches seem to be). Another strange thing is that my results were scheduled to come back on March 30 but they arrived a couple of days ago.
