My dad's being tested for Y-37 and mtdna. His first 12 markers came back as a match with Niall. Should I be excited or is this fairly common? I ordered the deep clade test for R1b.

I would definitely be excited! That is cool!

It is likely your dad will be M222+ or R1b1b2a2e (2008 ISOGG Tree).

That was John Wayne's subclade, by the way. His real surname was Morrison, and the Morrison family has dna tested the Duke's line.
