No, you will only find out if you have any Native American on your direct maternal line. If the Native ancestry is on a different branch of your family tree it will not show up on an mtDNA test. There are other companies that do tests on autosomal DNA and compare it to their own DNA databases and give you percentages of possible ancestry but they are not known to be completely reliable. For example, someone just posted that they received results for an aunt from England that showed Native ancestry.

So if it is in my direct maternal line it will definitely show up on this test? Sorry for sounding so dumb. Thanks for answering my question.

        mother's mother's mother...ONLY

Mtdna only tests the thin thread of mother's mother's mother... .all the way back.

          snikda:

note that also the basic mtdna test (HVR1) will tell you whether you have native american ancestry on your maternal line. Native Americans belong to mtdna haplogroup A, B, C, D, and sometimes X, and that can be discovered also by the basic test. The full mtdna will give you much more information, potentially saying something more specific about the origin.

I had my mtdna test done thru the Genographic Project two years ago. It was just $99 plus tax or something and came to about $107.

If you get your maternal line (mtdna) done it will only show mothers mothers mothers mothers mothers etc female dna. If you have Native American dna from a mothers mothers father, the mtdna won't be the best for that.

The test I think you are looking for, to see if there is any Native American, is called an admixture test and I had that done too, thru www.ancestrybydna.com , two years ago. It's the 2.5 test. Two years ago it was approximately $200, I think. I think the prices probably went up since then.
