  • R1b1c7 origins

I have read about the R1b1c7 haplogroup, and its up t0 20% concentration in Northwest Ireland(and spread to Northeast Ireland and Southwest Scotland) and theoretical relationship to Niall of the Nine Hostages.

However, why is it theorized that R1b1c7 originates to this particular person? Couldn't it just as easily as have orginated at his father, grandfather, son, or grandson? Furthermore, given its dominance, in NW Ireland, couldn't it have orginated much earlier, 2,000 to 4,000 years ago? The paper's statement: "The level of diversity assessed using 15 microsatellite markers support an origin ~ 1,000 years ago. " This statement seems quite subjective given the volatility in STR mutation.
