What is the difference between I1a and I1as? Is I1as something that FTDNA tests for?

Some people refer to two or more people (who have tested as I1a) as I1as. There are also references to I1a anglo-saxon as opposed to I1a nordic for example. FTDNA will only tell you if you are I1a. The I1a Project is attempting to subdivide I1as based on geography and is well worth a look if you have tested as I1a. Hope I haven't confused you further.
