  • Need help interpreting Y-DNA matches

    Hello,

I know many people here have more knowledge of this type of testing and I just wanted their opinion . This is going to be a long post but it may be neccesary to include all matches to get an overall view. My haplogroup is R1a I ordered the deep sub clade test but that has to be rerun.

My fathers side goes back to Poland . I just had some basic questions about the results.

--Why are there a number of Native Siberian,Mongolian and Kazakh exact matches? Does this mean I am closely related to them? In photographs these people look Asian and I suppose they are. My Father and I dont look very similar to them and those matches somewhat surprised me.

--What is the significance of the Ashkenazi matches or Ashkenazi Levite matches which seem prevalent in the one,two and three step mutations?
Do these point to some Jewish ancestry at some time ?

--The four step mutations contain C3 haplogroup matches mentioning Mongolia, China,Kazakh,Native Siberian. What exactly would C3 take my ancesters to in what time frame?

--What else could I learn about the paternal side of my ancestry with these matches? Thanks-Brian

The results are somewhat ambiguous but seem to point to eastern Russian or central Asian origins. Many of your exact twelve marker matches are from this area. On the other hand a twelve marker match is not a very close match. A major problem is that many of these matches are probably research subjects rather than FTDNA patrons. The consequence is that these subjects probably have not been tested for more markers and thus will not show up at the 25 or 37 marker level. I expect that it will be a long time before this problem is resolved.
At first glance the Jewish matches appear to be cousins rather than on your direct line since there are not that many exact Ashkenazi matches. In all likelihood the C "matches" are unrelated since you can't be both R1a and C. They appear because STR patterns from different genetic lines show some overlap.
Again, my comments are only suggestive awaiting more data. A SNP R1a subclade test might help.
P.S. Your Y dna line has nothing directly to do with physical appearance. To the extent that they have been identified, the genes for appearance fall on the autosomes or non sexual chromosomes. The Y dna line tested here comprises far less than 1% of your total genetic makeup.
