  • 20% ME & J2a1a

    Hi folks,
Maybe I should post this on the Autosomal thread, BUT I TRIED & my post did not go through. So..if I may...a few questions please??
I'm pretty skeptical of Autosomal testing, but...My results of my DNAPrint Euro 1.0 came back as follows:
    78% NE
    20% ME
    2% SA
    0% SE

Now...I had my paternal YDNA tested & double SNP'D & it is for sure J2a1a (J2f) FTDNA did the testing & I trust them.
So, wouldn't my results be consistent with my YDNA results?
I only met my bio Dad a couple times & looked up his brother who submited his YDNA for me, as my bio Dad is dead.
At first I thought AHA! a non-paternal event UNTIL I came back with 20 % ME on MY test. I'm a female, BTW. AND my Uncle matched one person with the same surname who anyone had never met before, so...I'm pretty sure my Uncle & my Dad are in fact blood brothers.
My Uncle thought we were IRISH.
He did not take the results kindly as he's not very well educated & from KY.
I don't mean to upset ANYONE from KY as my MATERNAL family is from there as well.
It's just that he thought he was IRISH.
I tried to explain that the YDNA was only from the original ancestor, but that only made it WORSE! LOL! I gave up!
Here's something strange...when I did meet my bio Dad, I thought Man! He looks ARAB! Our surname is MAY, so no clues there. I do know my paternal family has been in the southern US for quite a few generations.
Nobody on that side can tell me anything.
My question is: is the 20% a LARGE amount of ME considering my J2a1a YDNA?
How do you measure that? I have no paperwork to consider.
For instance: My husband has 6% NA on his first test. Before we did the test, we went through his genealogy paperwork & oral Cherokee traditions &
came up with that exact figure! His Cherokee ancestry is really recent, only a few generations back & can be proven. So what's up with my 20% ME?
We NEVER told ANYONE at DNAPrint what we were expecting.
So, it really made me a LITTLE less skeptical.
I appreciate any input, but please be KIND to me as I'm really trying to find my paternal ancestry. I've been in FTDNA's database for about 4 years & only ONE match & hardly ANYTHING in my REO page.
I'm so frustrated! My husband has TONS of matches & I had to talk him into doing this!
    Thanks!
    Cinda

    Hi Cinda,

I personally think that the 20% ME ancestry is pretty high even considering your paternal line is J2. I am also J2 and my results were only 10% ME. On the whole though I do not think that the ancestry from the Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroups affects your autosomal results though as the Y-DNA and mtDNA lines are so ancient in terms of ancestry.

      Hi JMan!
I haven't talked to you in awhile.
So what you are saying is that I could've picked up some ME from my mtDNA, making my % of ME higher?

Nope. What I am saying is that generally Y-DNA and mtDNA have little to do with autosomal results since autosomal results are from all of your ancestors.
