  • Chinese Turkestan misread as Native American?

Is there anyone else on the forum that has tested with both companies, and have had results similar to mine?

AncestryByDna says I'm 17% Native American. With DNA Tribes I have no Amerind matches. I don't even have East Asian matches.

In my newest (August 2007) updated extended report from DNA Tribes, my easternmost matches are:

Uzbek (Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan) (0.36) 1.25
Kirgiz (Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan) (0.23) 1.22
Kazakh (Northwest Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan) (0.5) 1.19
    Uyghur 2 (Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan) (0.32) 1.05

I wonder if these Chinese Turkestan matches could be what AncestryByDna is interpreting as Native American.

    Rainbow,

AbDNA and DNAT use completely different markers and your Central Asian match scores are not remarkable. However as you have gotten results from both tests that do not accord with known genealogy or anomalous results appears whether SNP's or STR's are sampled, your conjecture that both are reading 'the same thing' is understandable. But the matter cannot be resolved without additional tests and you may never get an agreement between AbDNA and DNAT.

To settle the matter of the NA score on AbDNA you might test your parents or aunts and uncles. If they don't get any NA you can write-off your NA score as a fluke. Or if you are convinced your genealogy is air-tight, you could insist on taking one of the AbDNA Euro's.

On the DNAT side your results are either due to a lack of appropriate reference populations in the DNAT db, or, as is rather more likely, due your admixed profile. The solution to the second is to IGNORE all the top matches in your Extended Report and credit only those matches that fall within the range of matches to known majority ancestries. In example, does your 1/4 Czech ancestry make any appearance in your Extended Report? Are there any other matches around the Czech match score that reflect any other 1/4 ancestry?

Most of the top 20 in my August 2007 updated report matches my known ancestry.
August 13, 2007 DNA Tribes new updated report

      Top 20 matches

      Portugal
      Central Portugal
      Northeast Spain
      Portugal (yes, again)
      Denmark
      Flemish
      Ireland
      Piemonte, Italy
      Bosnian Mountain Villages
      Syria
      Morocco
      Flemish (yes, again)
      Northern Ireland
      Dundee, Scotland
      Flemish (Belgium)
      Switzerland
      Glasgow, Scotland
      Southern Tunisia
      Extremadura, Spain
      Lille, France

      **************************************

My Czech match is in my extended report at (0.25) 2.22. My father is 1/2 Czech. The other 1/2 is Dutch & British. I'm considering the Bosnian match as a 'deep ancestry' stand-in for the Czech.
I have no one else to test. My only family is my mother, she has 00% Native American. I know my mothers family tree extensively, and is British (Norman & Jute, Scottish, Welsh), there is distant Swiss on her side. The only known Syrian is from the Crusades era (Holy Land Muslim woman converted and married Norman). No known Tunisian or Moroccan.

If DNA Tribes can pick up distant Syrian & Swiss they surely must be able to pick up 17% Native American, but they picked up nothing. I have no Amerind matches.

One of the two companies is massively wrong with my test results.

*Most British people are of ancient Iberian Celt ancestry.

Rainbow, alot of people have complained about the same thing, that they don't get Native American matches on the DNA Tribes test when they do get a percentage on the ABDNA test or when they know they have Native American ancestry. It's a mystery why it happens. Did you get any Mestizo matches on the DNA Tribes test?

I didn't know that. I didn't see anyone else on the forum telling about their conflicting results like mine. Who else?
            I don't match Mestizo either.

              Rainbow,
Did you also get the Autosomal markers from FTDNA? I see that FTDNA offres the same 15 markers that DNA Tribes does plus some others. What would I do with the FTDNA markers, I assume they don't offer an analysis of them? It is cheaper to get all of the markers from FTDNA. Thanks.

PS- I had the ABDNA 2.5 done but I lost the CD. Did that have the same aDNA markers as FTDNA and DNA Tribes?

                  Confused

Here is my family breakdown so far from ABDNA:
Maria 10% Native American (Up to 18%)
Mother 7% Native Amrican Up to 18%
Father 0% Native American Up to 6%)
Now ABDNA says that they could be wrong and he might have as much as 6%. My father is lossing his battle with life. I had this test done becasue he had always heard he had Native Ancestry. The records seem to confirm this but the test doesn't without the error range. What do I tell him. How can it be maybe. I would think that you either have the markers or not. Or is the 6% based on failed markers. I can't figure how they calculate the percentages. How do they do this? I admit I am left with questions. I have absolutely no problem with my father being 100% European except that I have traced both of my parents back to the same Native American Tribe, the Potowomecke in Stafford and King George County, VA . I am going to test my 2 daughters, 1 grandaughter, 2 brothers and 1 sister to see what they come up with.

                    Not the same...

The ABDNA 2.5 test uses 175 markers and you can get a copy of the cd I think for $10.00 by contacting them at 1-941-366-3400. The DNA Tribes test uses 15 CODIS markers. Not the same.

Thanks for the info. The CD has the 175 markers on it right? Aren't all of these autosomal tests based on the respective company's database of populations? DNA Tribes only has one of my First Nations listed. They don't seem to have a lot of North American First Nations in their database. Where would I plug in these FTDNA CODIS markers to find out what they mean?

Who else? Me. I got 60 percent Native American on ABDNA and no Native American matches on DNA Tribes. My highest scores were Austria, Belorussian, Bavarian and Swiss. I don't know my European ancestry so those could be right, or not. But I did get a top score of Mestizo in the World Region.

My Native American score is 17%. but it has the range of 8% either way, up to 25% or down to 9%. My European could be 75% to 91%. The average, or mid-point, is what is on my certificate. I had 7 failed markers.

I ordered the paper version. I tried to compare them once with Oxford, but they're incompatible. Not the same markers, or they are coded for secrecy or copyright I suppose.

I didn't order autosomal from FTDNA. I came in to the FTDNA forum by way of The Genographic Project. I've only had my mtDNA done by FTDNA. That was last year. Right now I'm waiting for FTDNA tests on extra swabs I sent in to find out my subclade and my ccr5 (batch 221). I had my autosomal done by DNA Tribes because I wanted to know what 'tribe' I descend from. I needed the analysis.
