There is considerable linkage disequilibrium in the autosome that is being investigated by SMGF. One source of LD are the genetic 'frames' around genes, sequences on either side of a gene that are not subject to recombination, and so pass on from generation to generation along with the gene. It is thought these frames might constitute a class of ancestry-informative-markers. This news release indicates that these 'frames' may play a more active role than simply isolating the gene. AND how a mutation in one of the framing sequences may actually effect the expression of the gene itself.
