  • I KNOW you guys hate this, but....

    Hi all,
I KNOW you guys hate questions about autosmal testing, but here goes.:
I have taken virtually EVERY test FTDNA offers & had a little money to spend on a test from AncestrybyDNA. OUT OF CURIOSITY.

I upgraded to Euro 1.0 recently, my % are 78% Northern European 20% Middle Eastern, & 2% South Asian.

My questions are- The 20% Middle Eastern fits because my paternal YDNA is J2f. The 78% Northern European fits as well.
On my Mom's side, Ydna is R1b1c & U5a, so I'm thinking the majority of the 20 % Middle Eastern must have come from my paternal side. It seems to fit.
Does this seem to be ALOT of Middle Eastern DNA? IS THERE ANY WAY TO TELL HOW RECENT IT IS??
My husband came up with 6% Native American & his paper trail supports this to a T!
Unfortunately, I have no such paper trail to lead me to a Middle Eastern ancestor on either side.
Can anyone explain how I came to have such a HIGH % of this Middle Eastern DNA.
PLEASE, no cutting remarks on how I should've KNOWN better than to buy this test! I went into this knowing most people look down on this test. I was skeptical too. But I thought it would be fun.
    Thanks,
    Cinda

    Hi Cinda,

You may have just recieved an extra share of Middle Eastern recognized markers. Genes are like the rolling of the dice, where you could end up with a number of different combinations. Full-blood siblings can vary significantly in their autosomal tests, and this does not make them any less related. It simply demonstrates how much our ancestors 'got around.'

I don't think that we have the technology to give an indication of the time frame, (but someone can correct me if I am wrong.) You may also not be looking for one single ancestor to explain your test but rather several ancestors bringing some degree of Middle Eastern DNA that simply adds up in you.

    Hope this helps.

      Hi Pleroma,
I see what you mean. I'll tell you, I cannot wait until Autosmal testing becomes more of a "science" if you know what I mean! I would love to pinpoint WHO this Middle Eastern ancestor was! At least MY ancestors will have ME to thank for all the testing that has been done.
      Thanks for the reply,
      Cinda

Insofar as the test was of autosomal DNA the Middle East component might have come from either parental line, or both. The SNP's could be ancient, they are stable and that is one of the reasons they make good ancestry-informative markers. But with a 20% concentration, you are just a couple generations away from a Lebanese grandmother, or somesuch. In other words, a family elder that would stand-out at the reunions and be hard to misplace. So a descent from both parental lines is easier to imagine.

          Hi Tomcat,
There's nothing on my maternal side suggesting Middle Eastern genes. We've tested Y lines & Mtdna on that side, & nothing shows anything but Ne European. I've always looked at my father ethnicity with suspicion.
He's very dark with jet black hair. He's desceased now, but he always said he was "irish". When I talked to his brother Jerry about the J2 results, He blew a gasket! He said it's impossible! I said DNA doesn't lie. He's a hillbilly from Ky & I'm thinking we might be Melugeon, whatever that means. It's debatable WHAT they are.
But, if there is a melungeon or Lebenese in the immediate family, they are not willing to talk about it! I don't think it's on my mom's side.

Very interesting results Cinda. I took the EURO-DNA 1.0 test a while ago too and my results were 50% MED, 40% NOR and 10% ME. My paternal line is also J2 and my mtDNA is also U5a.

I just sent my kit back to DNAPrint yesterday for my new upgrade to EURO-DNA 2.0. It will be interesting to see what the results of that test say for me.

              Euro 1.0 results.

Well since the Euro 1.0 was brought up I have never really dealt with my scores from it. It states: 47% Northern European, 23% South Asian (Some people say that Native American and Asian are connected, I have no I idea if they are or not) 23% Middle Eastern, and 7% Southeastern Europe. My 1600 and forward ancestry is Native American, English, Irish, Scotish, Welsh, German and French so far. Before 1600 I have found unverified connection on both sides to the monachy of different countries, not bragging , just stating. Any thoughts?

Autosomal need not correspond perfectly with ancestral Y or Mt. But why not swab Uncle Jerry?

                    Hi Jman & Maria,
Jman, I see where you have that J ancestry as well. And you are U5a as well!
Hi "cousin! I'm gonna upgrade myself as soon as I can. AncestrybyDNA, as you know, has a new test. Let me know how that turns out, OK?

                    Maria,
That 23% Middle Eastern is a LITTLE strange! Of course my YDNA "Paper trail"
has no link to any Middle Eastern ancestor either, so, you can bet my curiosity is peaked. At least my YDNA is J. J2f to be exact! With you, it is a mystery. As far as the East Asian goes. My husband had the same thing.
It came back 6% EA instead of Native American, but when he folded his chart into the triangle, it pointed to NA. So we just call in NA. His GGreat grandma on the maternal side was NA & his GGrandpa on his paternal side was a great deal NA as well . So, he told me before we got the results back, he said "I have figured this out". "If the test is accurate, I should be 6% NA." Imagine his surprise when it came back EXACTLY 6%!
But..finding my Lebonese (or whatever) ancestor is proving difficult to do.
When I attended a family reunion & collected the YDNA swab, my family members told me to not be surprised if I found something "Exotic"! Well, I sure did! Then I receive the 20% Middle Eastern on the autosmal test. That's ALOT of Middle Eastern DNA! But everyone clams up & will not talk about it. Only thing I can figure out is because of today's political climate & 9/11.
Anyway, good luck with your search!
                    Cinda

                        Hi, Kat.
I agree with you. My father "looks" (or looked ,he's past away) like someone from Greece or Italy. I never expected Middle Eastern. I don't know why. My surname is very NE. It's Mayes. It was May, but the ES was added in the 40's. Don't know why.
Anyway, this DNA stuff is so confusing & exciting all at the same time!

                        Tomcat,
I'm sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. Uncle Jerry's DNA is what I had tested. My dad (his brother) passed away in the early 90's. I guess to make it easier to explain, I always say my father's YDNA, or something to that extent. I know what you might be thinking Tomcat, (I have, too) that there might be a non paternal event. I thought that until we matched someone EXACTLY at 12 markers & a distance of ONE with 25 markers. His surname is the exact same as ours & we had never met. Bennett said I shouldn't worry about upgrading to 37 markers or higher because of the surname match, & because our haplotype is very rare. That's the ONLY match we have! That's been 4 years ago! NO MATCHES AT ALL! NONE! Very frustrating! Bennett said that while that might be frustrating, when I get a match, it will be a significant one! BTW, I haven't checked the numbers lately, but our surname project is one of the biggest in the database! And here sits lonely old me, never matching anybody.
What do you think about this idea I have? I think that my direct line MUST be from someone of Middle Eastern descent, & they KNOW where they came from & they know about their heritage, so they don't NEED to be tested. Or, here's my husband's theory...He thinks our surname has be "Americanized" & the May is not the original surname. But, it seems in that case, I would match SOMEONE. Even if it's a different surname from my own.
I would love to hear from anyone about those "theories"!
                        Thanks,
                        Cinda

                          Please post 1.0 results.

How about everyone who tested with Euro 1.0 post their results. Please! I think its cool . I just don't know how to figure out who gave what. Very interesting!
                          So it looks like this:
                          1. 10% Native American
                          a. Potowomecke (I know there has to be more then 1 line but haven't found them yet)
                          2. 90% European.
                          a. Northern European
                          1.H1a1(does it go here)
                          b. South Asian
                          c. Middle Eastern
                          d. Southeastern European

I certainly will Cinda! I took the test mainly to see if I register with any Northeastern European ancestry as my paternal grandmother was Finnish.

Did Uncle Jerry take the AbDNA/Euro autosomal or just the Y? Think Uncle Jerry or any other elder in that line ought to take the autososmal. That would clear-up some basic questions about the MidEast score.
