  • Mutation from Father to Son?

Does loci 4, DYS#391, mutate from father to son? Please advise. Thank you for your time.

A mutation on Y must, by definition, mutate from father to son. There is no way to predict in advance when and where it will happen, but every Y mutation out there had to happen between a father and his son at some time.

We have a small cluster forming in our Y-DNA group. The only difference between two of the participants is in loci 4. (24/25)
Since all mutations on Y occur between father and son, is one testee descended from the father's generation and the other the son's?
      Thanks.

Quite interestingly, I found in my group, which is studying Arabian lineages, that members with DYS 391=10 form a cluster and members with DYS 391=11 form another cluster.
