The M172 listing maybe different depending on level of snp test (subclade branch) but yes father will be J haplogroup and a SNP subclade branch that branches off of the J-M172 subclade branch if not listed as M172

If we're talking about Y haplogroup. The mtDNA haplogroup would be entirely unconnected in this instance.

Assuming that we are speaking about a biological son, then the answer is absolutely yes.

Unless a SNP occurs in the son (very unlikely) and creates a new subclade. For instance, let's say the father is R1b1c* and there is a SNP that the son has which defines a new subclade. According to the ISOGG haplogroup tree, this would be classified as R1b1c11.

However, besides being very unlikely, the chances are that the SNP wouldn't be discovered very soon, so it would seem that they're in the same subclade. In the absence of the discovery of his SNP, the son would also be classified as R1b1c*.

But if the original poster is asking can an R1b1c man have a biological son who is found to be in the R1a or J2 (or whatever) haplogroup, then the answer is an unequivocal "NO" as Vince wrote above.
