  • Managing a Kit

I have uploaded my DNA to Family Tree DNA from Ancestry. Through my fee account I ordered a Y DNA test for my dad who has given me the permission to manage the information. I am not exactly sure where to enter his kit number. Do I create a new account just for his info or can I somehow link it to my account?

Any tips would be most appreciated.

When you uploaded your Ancestry file to FTDNA, you received a kit number and password. To order a test from FTDNA for another person (in this case your father), you should order it when you are NOT logged in to your account. This is because, if ordered from your account, the ordered test will be given your account number. Your father needs to have his own account and account number.

If this is what has happened, and just recently, you should call FTDNA and tell them that the Y-DNA test you ordered will be used by your father, and not you. They should be able to change the kit and give it a new kit number. You would then use that kit number, and whatever password they give, to log into your father's kit and manage it. FTDNA does not have an option for linking your father's kit to your kit. You must log in to each kit separately.

The only option for managing kits more simply is by starting your own project, such as a family project. But for two kits, it's not worth it.

Thank you. I did order it while I was signed into my account. I will call and see what can be done. Thank you for your reply.

You can find the phone number and the hours open to call, plus a link to chat and hours for that, by clicking on the link for "Customer Support" at the top right of the forum pages.

If I order a Kit now for someone else and put my email for email for "bill to" and the other person's email as email for "send to"
then will we both get notices and will matches just see his email, or?
