Native American and Vikings

There is a myth that i heard a coulpe of times that some of the vikings that lived in America married with local Native Americans and later became members in their tribe. Once i saw a televsion program which claimed that this particular tribe had some persons wih blue eyes and were much lighihter then the rest of the tribe. Unfurtunelty i can´t remeber which tribe or exaktly were, but probably somewere in the south of todays Canada. Has anyone heard of this? If so, it would be very interesting with a DNA test to prove if this is really true.

The Vikings did arrive in Canada. There is an historic site in Newfoundland named L'Anse aux Meadows, which is the remains of a small Norse settlement:

Although it is possible there were some Vikings who mixed with the Natives, it doesn't seem that likely given that there is evidence that the Vikings brought their women with them, they were very few in number and also that they fought with the Native population.

When the French and English, Irish, Scottish etc. arrived, that was a whole other story. They mixed very freely with the Native population which would more likely account for blue eyed Native people.

There is nothing in the Icelandic sagas about sex with the Natives or the taking of Native slaves/hostages. Although many Icelandic sagas were lost at sea long ago.

If i remeber right the program said that the Vikings sailed up on the rivers and came a far bit in the central parts of Canada. There must be someone here who seen it, i belive it was a BBC production..

Google "vinland sagas" there are only three in the records, one by Leif, one by his half-sister Freydis, and a third by Gudrun that lasted a full year, records extensive coast exploration, resulted in a Viking birth in Vinland and makes appreciative observations of the Natives.

You might read up on the Zeno Chronicles. It alleges that a Sir Henry Sinclair made a journey in 1398 that made it into the upper U.S. seaboard. Reference stories of the Westford Knight.

That would be the Mandan Indians that Lewis and Clark found some to have blue eyes.
