  • DNA Tribes Upgrade- Big Difference

I upgraded my DNA yesterday and got the results back in the evening. Quite a difference from my first test done in March of this year. As their database grows the results are more realistic, generally.
DNA Tribes still has a very limited database for Native Americans and no samples from Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw or many other tribes. They advised me that in the future they will be testing more Native Americans including those I mentioned. We have a paper trail of Southeast Native American on 3 different lines but still probably less than 15% of my total makeup.
The results for Global Match were:
Scottish 17.8, being the highest and the remainder scores were between 6.7 and 3.9.
Italian, Caucasian, Hispanic(Michigan), Austrian, Norwegian, German, Hispanic, Belgian, Hispanic (Arizona)
I assume that possibly some of my families Native American DNA is showing up as Hispanic. We know that Hispanics from Central America, for example have approx. 90% Native American in their mix.
Anyone have any information about the Hispanic samples versus Native American.

There is some coverage of the issue in Hammer's 2005 population structure paper in the Ydna section of the Ftdna library. Specifically one table involves a direct comparison of haplogroup membership for ethnic groups in the U.S.

My 27 marker upgrade extended results from DNA Tribes.

Even though this thread is from four years ago, I decided to post here.

My first DNA Tribes test was in December 2006. Back then it was only 13 STR markers. I did most of the updates since then, including the upgrade to 15 STR markers, and later, 21 markers, and now 27 markers.

My known genealogical ancestry is 3/4 Northwestern European (mainly United Kingdom), and 1/4 Slovakian.

The extended panel now has 1,082 populations. Here are my top 100:

Rank Sample Name (TribeScore) MLI Score
      1 Northeast Spain (0.39) 3,272.44

        DNA Tribes vs. known ancestry

Interesting results Rainbow. I'm adopted. I know my biological mom is descended from Lithuanian Jews but my bio dad is said to be "probably of Irish extraction". I'm still not sure what the results are telling me. One thing I did notice was that your highest MLI is lower than my #100 MLI. Maybe I'm a "cleaner" mix?

I just did the 27 marker test and got the following top 100:

Does anyone know if the 27 markers in Tribes are also tested in Family Finder?

DNA Tribes tests STRs and Family Finder tests SNPs. The advocates of DNA Tribes will obviously disagree with me, but I would not waste money on their test.

They have upgraded from testing 21 to 27 markers. Well, Family Finder's chip tests half a million. And the difference between STRs and SNPs is like apples and oranges. STRs are subject to change in every generation, especially when dealing with autosomal DNA. SNPs are much more stable and reliable in providing some insight into ethnic/geographic ancestry, especially at the level of 500,000.

The problems with the DNA Tribes test is seen in the numerous stories where people are told they match some population half way around the world from where their known ancestry comes. If there are some cases where DNA Tribes reports something that makes sense, you still are taking a chance of spending money on a test whose results may make no sense at all.

I hope you still the forum, Black Dutch.
The Hispanic category is a mixture of European (Spanish) and Native American and sometimes African. Native American means pure Native American, or those from actual recognized tribes and they keep their traditions. They may have some admixture also.
DNA Tribes still doesn't have any population samples from Cherokee, Creek, or Chickasaw.
I have a lot of matches to Latin American populations, and to fourteen of the Mestizo populations....my top one is #159 in my extended report "Mestizo (Honduras) (0.3) 338.05", and to all three of the Minnesota Native American populations (admixed), and I still match Athabaskan (Alaska) in the Native American panel....Athabaskan (Alaska) (0.02) 4.19
Hna Hnu (Otomi) (Hidalgo, Mexico) (0) 0.07

And I also match Finland and various Central Asian/Roma populations.
A person who is Finnish could be matched to Mestizo because the Central Asian markers are similar to Native American markers.

[QUOTE=MMaddi;229853]DNA Tribes tests STRs and Family Finder tests SNPs.

                  QUOTE]

DNA tribes uses the same method that Omnipop by Brian Burritt (San Diego PD) does. It might even use Omnipop for all I know. You can google a version of the Ominpop XL spreadsheet if you want to see what it is. I've ran my autosomal markers through Omnipop and another calculator and I don't know if I trust them much. I think they rely on way to much inconsistant data regarding population sampling. New versions seem to give different results too.

Both tests (STR and SNP) are accurate technically but I believe the application behind DNA Tribes and a few others based on autosomal STRs (i.e. Omnipop) just isn't what that type of autosomal STR testing is meant for.

Its not actually a difference in 500,000 SNPs vs. 15 STRs that make one better than the other. Its what occurs in the statistics calcuations. Remember so far we have not seen an origins map based in FF yet and I bet its because of the same reason; if the back end statistics are not reliable then the origins map will not be.

Does DNAT indicate that match number 159 (with a very low match index) would "mean anything"? Where do they draw the line? To me this is "cherry picking". What about the other 158? Do they better match your known genealogy? If so why ignore them?

One reason that you will not find Cherokee and Pautuxet and Catawba etc. is that they are highly admixed - and have been since the 1600s. Hence any matching would more likely be to their "European component" so how would one be able to interpret the results accurately?

I'm not ignoring the other 158. I'm not "cherry picking". Someone on another forum had posted a thread to show their top 100 from their extended report (21 markers), and I recently received my 27 markers and copied and pasted my top 100 to post in that thread (and I saved my top 100 in "notepad"), and I thought of posting it here too. Do you want me to post all my matches, or pm them to you? I have 518 matches at 1.00 and above, out of the 1,082.
                      My # 158 is Vienna, Austria (0.2) 339.11.
I know that I am part Welsh, and my Welsh score is at # 202 "Wales, United Kingdom (0.18) 243.38".

edit: If it's possible, I don't see a problem with adding a Cherokee, Iroquois, etc as one population. It could be called "Eastern Tribes (admixed)" or "Woodland Indians, USA (admixed)".

You have to look at traditional geneology to get the complete picture because is is simply where your ancestry in total is most common. I had high Spanish and Mestizo, and Mayan on the Native Panel. Like my DNAPrint results of 5% African, my Mestizo is the results are the result of having Native American (Cherokee <1896 Citizenship application>, Tuscarora and probably Mississippi Choctaw< a family lived 7 years in Nation) along with one listed on a census as Free Black and others who were listed free people of color in Virginia/NC My "Spanish" like my DNAPrint profile (70% Northern European, 17% South Asian, 11% Mediterranean, 2% Middle Eastern. <SA common in Spanish today and DNAPrint profile common in Spanish>) Is a reflection of my Welsh (descent of Spanish fishermen). Irish, Scots, Scots Irish, Cornish and English ancestry. The Visigoths also went into Spain. This might be the reflection of my Dutch, Swiss, German, French and Wallon ancestry showing up as Tribes "Spanish", not to mention the Spanish had communities in Netherlands. Perhaps Roma Gypsy also has something to do with my Melungeon ancestry and the results seen in Tribes Romania matches. I think tribes gives "clues" and sometimes direct answers to ancestry, but you have to look at traditional ancestry and the ancestry of populations in Europe to get a good picture.

This is why traditional geneology is so important with the DNA research.

The Mestizo results, along with the Europa test of Spanish, Basque, Norse, Celtic, Portugal match my British Isles and Dutch Wallon, French, Swiss and Rhine German ancestry to a tee

This also matches YDNA and Mt-DNA due to the LGM refuge being in Iberia Spain. Mt-DNA being I4 and Cornish, the result through traditional paper geneology fits both Mt-DNA (I match a I4 in Cornwall) surname history Cole, and the DNAPrint and Tribes results.

Do the research, it all fits

Hi Gene. Thank you for posting the latest news from DNA Tribes.

My guess is the most popular feature would be their new panels.
I would probably match all the new Azores categories if I did the new update. And possibly Berber and Croatia and Germany to a lesser extent.

They also have a new (late July) digest in pdf form about the Roma (also known as Gypsies).

(to anyone who doesn't already know - I posted in this thread under both "rainbow" and "~Elizabeth~")
