When I look at the match page here, is there any way to tall which of these possible matches are on my father's side as opposed to my mother's side?

And which is most important in determining closeness of relatives:

Longer cM or total shared cM?

You need to have close relatives from each side of you family test. Then you'll be able to compare match list.

If you don't have any close relatives to test then start with you top ten matches and try to find a connection to at least one of them and work from there.
