  • A Couple Newbie Questions?

If I have matches with genetic distances of 37/0, 67/1, and 111/2; can I "weight" one of these as having a shorter TMRCA? "0" looks good, but you're only tested to 37...is IT really closer? "2" for 111 is pretty close and probability at 111 looks better to me? They ALL look like 8 gen. or so. I have read most of what FTDNA has on the topic. Your experiences and comments are welcome.

Can one Triangulate "genetic distance"? Would any observations be meaningful?

Did you use TiPP ? !

    To answer your question: No.

A match with less markers means it is less certain how far back into the past the MRCA lived.

Also, when somebody is a match at 37 markers, and they tested to 67 markers, but they are only a match at 37 markers, then it is almost certain that MRCA lived before surnames came into existence.

What do you mean by that?

Testing multiple people with known relationships, and then observing their genetic distance to a potential relative?

Yes, that is a valid research avenue, as long as you are testing with cousins and not father/son pairs.

You should also consider Big Y testing. However, that potential relative would also need to do Big Y.

Those all sound like great numbers for a YDNA match. Is it the same person? I'd bet 8 generations or closer is a good estimate. Do they also show up on Family Finder?
