So, I'm being told that someone matches me on chromosome 6, and this person is asking for names, but I have no idea where to look, or what chromosome 6 is...

Can some one help me find this match please?

Chromosomes are made up of DNA. Humans have 46, in pairs, 22 of which are autosomes. The last pair is the sex chromosomes.

However, you do not have to find chromosome 6 to answer your contact's question. He or she just wants to know the surnames you have in your family tree.

You can, however, find your match in your list of matches, find out what matches you have in common with each other, and then find out how many share the segment of DNA on chromosome 6. If the segment is large enough, you both probably received it from the same ancestor.

However, unless you have carefully constructed a family tree (not by copying Ancestry's mostly false trees) for about 5 generations, at least, you're not going to be able to do much.

Thanks very much. We got it figured out. I have had a very detailed genealogy for some time now that was useful.
