  • Can I Join Y Surname Group for My Mother?

There is no person I can find to do the Y test for my mother's father's line. I have looked through my extensive tree and just cannot find anyone. But I really want to learn more about this line. I am also thinking I could possibly find a male already in the group who is my line. Is this allowable?

It depends on the particular project administrator and the criteria for membership they use; for the projects I administer I would be fine with you being in the project. You can email the administrator of the project and see what they say.

It depends on the project. You should be able to find the project in your project tab by searching the surname. It should at least get you as far as a project description that describes what the project is about. Membership criteria are set by each Project Administrator. Those that are open, allow you to just click your "join" command and you are in. Those that are closed make you send a email request to the Admin who then decides if you are allowed to join.

I assume you have at least taken a familyfinder test which may contribute something to a project.

I have ordered the Family Finder and Mitochondrial Full Sequence for my mother. I will also need to transfer my own autosomal raw data here from Ancestry. So I have a few steps to take before I can make the request. I will look up the Project name to see if it is an open group. Thank you for the advice; I always like to plan ahead.

Would you like to try an experiment? You can do a free transfer of your Ancestry DNA right now and it will setup an account for you showing your top 20 matches.

You can use the following link:

It's never been easier to find new relatives, connect more dots and expand your genealogical reach. So, if you tested your autosomal DNA with a third party, transfer today and become part of the world's most comprehensive DNA database!

This will accomplish 2 things. First it will give a "credit" to someone who has already done the free transfer. Second you will be able to get a taste of the way the data is presented. It costs you nothing. You can unlock the account by getting others to transfer (thus giving you credits), or by paying a 39 dollar unlock fee.

I do have to warn you some people are saying that the transfer has kicked out with an error message in the last few days. In another thread I talked about Ancestry switching to new testing machines in the last month that may make the file incompatible. If your test was done more than 30 days ago and your transfer gives no error, it will help prove the files are compatible and the reported transfer error is specific to very recent tests.

I want to do the transfer of my DNA from Ancestry, but I have to talk to FamilyTreeDNA about it by phone in the morning. I think I messed up when I set up my original account, and I have to get that fixed first. It has my name on the account, but the test is for my Dad, and I think it has to be changed.

But I would be more than happy to give you credit when I do this. I like to help out others and be part of the community.

Thanks for that. When you do the transfer, use a new account for each person. In other words, if the existing account is under your name, and the DNA transfer is your father's DNA, use the create a new account option for the transfer. I know that the wording on the screen says click if you have an existing account, but that only applies if the transfer is for that exact person.

If the account with your Father's DNA is in your name - should be no problem for you to go in and change/edit the Name on that Account to your Father's name (or So-and-So's Dad or So-and-so c/o Your Name, or any other way you want Kit Name to appear).

But definitely, your DNA in separate Account from your Dad's. Tho it is fine to use the same e-mail address (it can be annoying when folks write and say "FTDNA says we are close relatives" and you have no idea which Kit because they say nothing about that - but I figure that is their bad, not mine for not having a different e-mail address for every kit I manage).

I did call FamilyTree, and the representative walked me through changing the account name to that of my father. So that is taken care of. Tomorrow I will go ahead and upload my Ancestry DNA results. I will first figure out how to give credit to you.
I can hardly wait until all the testing is done and results are posted so I can get to work on research. I am counting down the days.
Forgot to add - my Ancestry DNA testing was done at least a year ago, so I am hoping I will not have the uploading problems you mentioned.

                      Hi Maureen,
Giving the credit is simple. Just click on this link for the transfer:

This link is unique and will automatically do the proper referral credit.

                      Thanks again.

Okay, thank you so much for the link; I will definitely use it. I promise I have not forgotten you, we are just having speed problems on our computers at the house right now - due to the storm that went through. Charter Internet is working on it in our area, trying to repair it. I am thinking I will wait until Monday to do this, because everything is timing out on me and kicking me back out of things. So I don't want the upload to mess up on me when I try.

I uploaded my Ancestry raw dna files while ago - I finally got the link you provided to work. They said it should be about one week before I receive the full results.

For me I had full results within 24 hours - matches were done within minutes.

Thank you, Dabney. I just looked and the results are already in. Wow! That was fast! And my very first match is someone I knew I was related to, but my Ancestry DNA did not show it. That is strange.
