  • Blood type and DNA

Perhaps a very bizarre question, but have there been any studies on DNA results and blood types? My sister and I are A- and have been doing some research on this blood type and it is really bizarre.

23andme used to provide both ABO and non-ABO blood type predictions as part their old set of health reports. I'm not sure whether or not they still include that in their new set of health reports.

Their prediction for me and both of my parents was accurate.

The ABO typing was based on the following two papers:

Yip (2002). Sequence variation at the human ABO locus. Ann Hum Genet 66(1):1-27.

Gassner et al. (1996). "ABO Glycosyltransferase Genotyping by Polymerase Chain Reaction Using Sequence-Specific Primers", Blood 88(5):1852-1856.

      Hi sshayward,

My wife and her sisters have the A- blood type. Their ancestry is English, Irish, and German-Speaking Swiss. They have a history of Native American ancestry (Tuscarora), but difficulty in proving if the Native American in their DNA results is real or not. I don't know what area of the world, or populations, have high concentration of A- It would be interesting to see.

My sister and I have a different mother so we are assuming this A- came from our father's side. Our brother and other sister are not A-. It is interesting to research this A- as it is not common and their are some really bizarre stories out there. They do see a prevalence in the Basque ancestors but still not a lot of information.

          Hi,

          I am type A- and YDNA I1 (Z140)

          According to wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_...ion_by_country
the highest prevalence of group A is Europe and Scandinavia which also fits with I1.

We should carry this information with us as supply can be hard to find in an emergency especially if travelling in Asia.

This blood type also has the highest level of platelets and clotting proteins. I have always healed very fast when cut, minor wounds almost immediately, that was until I had a stroke, now the blood thinners I am on mean I now bleed quite freely, most annoying
