In my Family Tree DNA results I have been tested as being 1% Native American. It was VERY surprising as I live in Russia and never had any family story that would indicate this kind of connection possible.
I had my son tested as well and he was not reported to have this DNA.
I wonder if there is a possibility that he inherited it but in this test any result under 1% is considered too insignificant to report?

This result almost certainly merely indicates you have a little portion of Siberian/Altaic ancestry in common with ancestors of Native Americans from 14,000-20,000 years ago, rather than your having an ancestor within the past 500 years who was a Native American living in the Americas. Based on your words, I take it you could not have had ancestors who lived in Russian-era Alaska, correct?

      Thank you for your reply.

I am not aware of any family member from Alaska. As my family stories go I know only about my Finnish ancestry which showed in my DNA profile as well. However I had too many surprises in my DNA report: Iran, Turkey, Siberia, Poland, Germany, etc.

If my son inherited Native Americans DNA but has less than 1% of them you think the test would show it ?

Family Tree DNA's MyOrigins currently has problems differentiating some SNPs between Finns and Amerindians since it currently lacks Northern Amerindian population(s). Full Finns have also had small percentages of "Native American" show. Your "Native American" result, and theirs, are errors.

Thank you for sharing, it is a very interesting opinion. I will try to find out more about Northern Amerindians.

I agree that it is most likely due to the common ancestry of Native Americans and Siberian/Altaic peoples

Thank you. That most probably what my results are about.
