I've completed the YDNA 37 and FF tests.

What would i get more value from? Having both my parents tested with FF, or doing my MTDNA (or my mum's?)

I do have a brickwall on my Fathers Grandfather and on my mothers Grandfather, the Y37 results didn't yield any names which could be a match on the surname we've been give. Would going to the YDNA-67 help?

I've managed to confirm one cousin via DNA in 18 months.

    Thanks

    Ian

The FF on both parents would be a lot more valuable. It gets you a generation further back for comparisons, plus you know exactly what comes from your mother and your father. mtDNA really does not help for your questions at this point.

In my opinion, I would go with the two FF's over expanding the number of Y-markers.

Y-DNA only matches along your paternal line (your father's, father's, father's ---- father). Therefore it will not help on your mother's side and it will not help on your father's maternal side.

You didn't tell us if you where looking for his maternal grandfather (Y-DNA won't help) or his paternal grandfather (Y-DNA can help).

There could be an NPE in your direct paternal line much further back than FF goes, which in most cases is just 5 generations, and a close match with other people from a YDNA-67 test could get you closer to resolving that. So definitely get the YDNA-67 upgrade. Getting an FF for your father wouldn't prove his paternal line with just that test. More FF tests by the matches relatives would have to be done, in order to triangulate, as well as a Y-DNA upgrade. In order to find matches on your mother's paternal line she would need the FF test and for a close relative that is a direct descendant of her grandfather to also get an FF test and a Y-DNA67 test.

I would strongly recommend next step is doing FF on both your parents. It can be amazing how much this helps - somebody (say John Doe) is a weakish match for you, but a stronger match for one of your parents with Chromosome Browser showing that parent matches same segments you match for John Doe, plus some - you now can be quite sure that John Doe is a relative on that parent's side.

Once your Parents have done FF Test, not only do you have those results, but their DNA is in the system so at any time you can add Y-DNA on your father or MtDNA on either your father or mother (without needing to get another sample) if/when one of those tests seem like it would be useful.
