  • Database sizes and current location of testers

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Autosomal Database sizes, and current geographical locations of tested individuals for FTDNA, ANCESTRY and 23andME?

All I can find is this reference which might not be accurate - http://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_...mparison_chart

But it does not give geographical locations of tested individuals.

The chart reference and rumour has it that Ancestry has 1,400,000 atDNA tested people in the Database and 90% are located in the USA.

23andMe has about 1,000,000 and 90% in the USA.

FTDNA is apparently more international but has only 200,000 in the database with about 30% outside of the USA.

Does anyone know the true figures? Will FTDNA follow what Ancestry has done and advertise or release their numbers in their Database?

Those are the most accurate estimates you are going to find. No, FTDNA doesn't advertise the size of their Family Finder database and probably never will.

From FTDNA's facebook page posted on January 22, 2016

Family Tree DNA: Hi Rachel. Though our overall database is currently over 766 thousand people, we do not have information on the autosomal database.

If they don't have it is because they don't want to. I can go the the "Project Statistics" of the public website for my projects and see how many members have Family Finder. As a project admin I can go to the Order Summary page where I can see which tests each member has ordered.

This suggest to me they have this information in each customer's file and all they need to do is count the number. I don't think they want to tell us for business reasons.

I would think it's a positive business reason to divulge, especially to non USA residents who are looking for a database that has a higher proportion of non USA residents.

For example an Adoptee or Donor conceived person in Russia looking to test would select a company with a greater number of Eastern Europeans in the database.

Nevertheless the silence on atDNA database size and composition makes one think that FTDNA don't think it's a good business decision or advantage to announce.
