Test Upgrades & Pricing Questions

I've been searching the site and the forums but am not finding what I'm looking for... please forgive if this is repetitive.

1. Can you upgrade a family finder (autosomal) test to do Y-DNA or mtDNA test without submitting a new swab? I think YES but I want to double-check.

2.a) Is there a discount when upgrading from autosomal to Y or mt? If yes, what is it? Is there a code?

b) Is there a discount when upgrading Y or mt? I've been looking but can't figure it out. I am wondering if I can purchase a family finder now and get the full Y later on at a discounted price? Or if it will be better/cheaper to get the FF and Y from the start? And, again, what is the discount? Is there a code?

3. Is there a discount for purchasing multiple kits at once?

4.a) Is the return shipping fee ($9.98, I believe) added to each kit after the purchase price?

b) Is that different that the shipping fee to get the kit(s) to me to begin with?

yes, as long as it was not an Ancestry or 23andme transfer.
Transfers require a test kit to be mailed out for sample collection

yes, an upgrade gives you $30 off yDNA test.

But not on mtDNA tests.

No code is needed for upgrade. Just click on upgrade button on your account home page.

No.

In general, the best discounts are promotions. For example, last week there was one for 15% off, except for Family Finder that was $10 off (I think).

*Downfall is you have to wait lab testing time for each test. Would probably take over 6 months before you received yDNA 111 results.

Various times throughout the year tests go on Sale or coupon discount codes are given out. Currently I don't believe there is any coupon discount codes for above tests.

Y-DNA from 23andMe

I am reading conflicting information about whether or not Y-DNA transfer from 23andMe to ftDNA is possible. Y-DNA, which downloads from 23andMe in SNP format, needs to be converted to the STR format that ftDNA prompts us to manually enter. I am not tech-savvy and using a Mac precludes being able to use tools on y-str.org.

Is anybody aware of a somebody I can outsource this task to? As a favor or even for a modest donation? I have three Y-DNA profiles for family members currently on 23andMe and I want to avoid paying full price for a whole new battery of tests for them if possible.

It's not possible to do what you're hoping to do.

SNPs are single nucleotide base (A, C, G, T) locations on the y chromsome. STRs are multiple bases in a row on the y. An STR can consist of 2-5 bases (for instance, GTC) repeated 5-50 times - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micros..._and_Locations.

Even a two base STR repeated 5 times is 10 bases long. There could be scores of consecutive bases in an STR. Your 23andMe raw data file just does not have this kind of comprehensive information to determine STR counts.

You cannot transfer Y DNA information from 23andMe to FTDNA. You can only use Y DNA SNPs discovered by 23andMe when selecting projects to join and/or selecting further Y DNA SNP tests at FTDNA.

There is no conversion between SNPs and STRs.
