  • Advice wanted on next DNA test to take

I'm quite new to this so I'm after some advice as to what test to take next.

I've personally taken an Ancestry DNA test and transferred that in to FamilyTreeDNA. I'm a male and I believe that this is the equivalent of an FTDNA Family Finder test.

I have some interesting connections showing up now, but no idea how we are connected. I suspect some illegitimacy/adoptions around 1900.

To get a better handle on this I'd like to take further tests.

I have two brothers and a sister, all are willing to take the tests.

In your opinion, should I take a FTDNA Family Finder personally, or will my siblings add additional data? Or should I take one of the paternal / maternal tests and which particular one?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give,

    Regards

    Ryan

Your transfer from ancestry is the equivalent of a Family Finder test, so you have nothing to be gained from doing FF yourself.

If you do autosomal DNA tests for your brother and sister this will give additional information and additional matches as they will have inherited different segments of DNA from your parents.

If your parents are living, however, it would be better to do Family Finder tests on both of them, rather than on your siblings. Aunts and uncles are good too.

Y-DNA - a minimum of 67 markers. Y-DNA traces the paternal line only, but it can find matches that Ancestry.DNA and Family Finder will miss.

As others have stated the transfer of Ancestry.DNA to FTDNA is equidistant to FTDNA's FF test. You should not order it for yourself.

If you haven't done so you should upload your raw data from Ancestry.DNA to GEDmatch, a free matching service.
